Have you tried running the game "as administrator"?

In newer versions of Windows a few "important" folders are protected this way (at least if UAC is activated), a program needs special rights to write into certain folders, including "Program Files" and GOG's releases with the old installer choose "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com" by default. That's the reason why the new installer version installs into "C:\GOG Games" by default where no administrative rights are necessary (and in case you're wondering: yeah, GOG is slowly updating all the older releases to installer version 2).

So if you want to get rid of the necessity to run the game as administrator all the time (and don't want to deactivate UAC) you may want to reinstall it and manually choose a different folder like "C:\GOG Games\Darkstone".
