I bought both of these items, but can't get them to work. I've tried re-assigning from the arrow keys to other keys, but these items just don't seem to work. I checked them on my ship equipment list and they're showing the little coupling icon as locked. Is there something else I need to do to enable these?

Just to clarify, did you try to transfer energy from A to B when B's power level was below 100%?
When I played DarkStar I thought the upgrades were supposed to enable supplementing the recharge speed of the Shield/Guns at the cost of the other, like it's done in other space sims. At first I thought it was bugged and that the left/right arrows should move the slider below the ship damage icon in the upper-right corner.
After a long while it occurred to me that those upgrades provide an immediate transfer from A to B.
Please tell us if this doesn't work in your case.
