I picked up Mass Effect on Steam a couple days ago and it runs like crap. The settings are irrelevant and it crashes within 30 mins to 4 hours. I read that the problem is the new PhysX stuff that was added to the Nvidia drivers. Rolling back to 175.19 fixes the problem but it seems like too much work, especially given that all my other games work fine.
I read in a couple of places that Darkstar is one of the games that has problems. The others are things like Call of Juarez and even WoW.
Can anyone with these drivers confirm those problems? My card is an 8800gts 512. Secondly is there any problem with a 1600x1200 moniter res?
This question / problem has been solved by Phobossimage
I've recently installed 180.48 drivers and after a few hours of playing around with the game, I can say it's working pretty much fine.
I have to say that I have been running into a small issue, which I believe it's driver related, although I can't be sure (I'm running on a 8800gts 320 btw):
Sometimes when I start the game the background panorama of the main menu is missing, replaced by a black background. The menu buttons appear correctly, and all is fine, except if I want to have a visible cockpit in-game. To be more precise, sometimes when the game starts - lack of menu background and cockpit model. All else works the same.
I have ran into this "issue" both with 180.48 drivers and my last one, which were 174.something, if memory serves, so I really don't think that this batch of drivers would cause you more trouble than the last.
Also, the issue I've been talking about seems to go away after a system reboot, and also seems to be less probable of popping up after disabling PhysX GPU acceleration from nVidia control panel.
Best of luck.
hello to fellow 8800gts320 user :) ...
I have 180.48 installed on vista64 and it's pretty much the same as with Phoboss (sometimes black menu background etc., but otherwise works like charm), and absolutely no problem with mass effect either, I have retail dvd version though...
Thanks guys. I can confirm that DSO works perfectly with 180.48 drivers at 1600x1200 and full detail.
The is only one quirk. Whenever I change the video settings the main menu will be completely black and the view from any station promenade is also black. These screens stay that way until I leave the station once and the 3d engine "boots up".
