Just wondering if the multiplayer works, because I thought I had heard that the game servers were shut down... but just wanted to check.

Official multiplayer doesn't work since 2014 because GameSpy was shut down. There are unofficial replacements exist, such as CryMP and CryServ.

Do you happen to know what the player bases are like for these two services?

Last time i looked the servers were mostly empty. CryMP has a forum and a Discord server, you may look for players there.
