Hi all,
just downloaded and installed the game, launched it for the first time and configured it to see how it runs.
I'm on an MSI GS63 Stealth laptop, i7 8750H, 16GB, GTX 1060 6GB (Win10 Home and external 1080p monitor), and I seem to be getting a pretty stable and smooth framerate, right off the bat. Roaming around the first areas on the island, it looks like 60fps, even though I didn't find an fps counter here on GOG, yet, so I'm not sure if it's really 60 or 50+ish. Everything's maxed to very high, with a fullscreen resolution of 1920x1080, and V-Sync enabled.

It looks pretty sweet, I have to say (I only played Crysis on my XBOX 360 ages ago), especially since I like to enjoy these classics as vanilla as they come, instead of modding/changing them in any way.

All that said, I'm wondering, is this the best I can get? I see tons of different executable files - Crysis, DX9, Crysis 32 and 64... - and I'm a bit lost. I launched the game via the green 'Play' button, then the DX9 version under 'More' menu, and finally the .exe file in Crysis 64 folder. They all look and perform the same, hence my doubt of possibly missing something important?

If you would take screenshots in suitable places, you could compare and spot the differences between the DX10 and DX9 versions. When busy looking at the enemies, you may easily miss them. To get to the highest resolutions in the list you need to scoll that very tiny scroll bar in the resolution settings. I only played these ten years ago and installed no mods then but I am certain there are graphical enhancement mods out there. Is that what you are asking about?

ADD: Just to make sure: You are playing on a DX10 capable OS and GPU, right? If not, there are guides how to make the DX9 version look better.

First, about higer resolutions: sure, they're there. I could select 1440p and 4k, since I have both custom resolutions saved in my Nvidia control panel. I just decided to stick to 1080p, as my system starts chocking a bit when I supersample more demanding games (no problem with Guilty Gear Xrd, for example, but supersampling things like Doom or the newer Tomb Raider series causes frame rate to drop more than I like).

Finally, no, I'm not looking for graphical mods or enhancements. What I'm trying to understand if I'm getting the most I can, out of this GOG relase. I'll look for some guide then, thanks! ^_-

Edit --- If this scenario is still valid today, then I'm playing with DX10, as I set the game to Very High all around. It would also explain why I didn't notice glaring differences between the various launcher that I tried.

Well, at first I was not going to mention about Windows XP, that does not support DX10, and such but then it struck me that on these forums you encounter people playing on old hardware and old Windows all the time.

The game is twelve years old and even if it was gorgeous when released, things have since advanced and even medium budget games of today, if they invested in looks, do clearly look better.

My top GPU from the same year as the first Crysis could not put out a frame rate anywhere near 40 F/s with DX10 on a mere 1280×1024 resolution so only a little bit into the game I forced the DX9 version to be able to play. Forgot how to force it but now that you know it is possible you can search, if you are interested, to see how it looks.

I cannot say anything about GOG's version as I only have the games on discs.

Ahh, I see you're right! I didn't think about it. Nono, I'm playing on a relatively new machine (I bought it 5/6 months ago).

My first experience with Crysis was on the XBOX360, when it was released via Games on Demand, and - while I loved it on the whole - I can see now how that port pales in comparison to the original release. Sure, as you mentioned, one can tell it's not a current generation game, but it's still gorgeous (at least on its complete form), and holds up beautifully.

Edit - Tried it again and yeah, I can tell there is no difference between launching the game via the usual green button or by following the direct link to the DX9 version, so I guess I'm good to go.
