Poor graphics and one heck of a steep learning curve. But once you start getting in, the game has amazing depth and (re)playability. The most detailed tank system anywhere ever! Height, impact angles, muzzle velocities, things like turret side armour thickness, ground pressure. Unbelievable amount of data and it all matters.
The sequels improve on some aspects, but this is THE ONE. And this is the one about west front, which is the most interesting theatre for many.
I love this series. Can't speak for the "steep learning curve", as I've been playing ASL and other grognard fair since the 80's. So playing this was 2nd nature. But I see your point- the wealth of detail can be overwhelming for the novice. However, the rewards are great for learning this game system.

Barbarossa to Berlin improves greatly upon Beyond Overlord, but Afrika Korps didn't have quite the impact for me. Lately I've been playing the Panzer Command series from Matrix games, heir apparent to CM. Improved graphics and a streamlined interface are just two of it's many charms.

I love the concept of WEGO (pre-plotting moves, then watching your plans unfold VCR-style for 60 seconds of excitement and suspense.

Jarmo you would probably like Steel Panthers World at War also :) It is free (was?) on the net. If GOG got the old games I would buy them here too.
I've been meaning to give the "new" CM series another try, but with 100 unplayed games on the shelf it might take a while.

Doesn't look half bad and I'd probably love it once I got the hang of it.

But I really, really should give Theatre of War another stab first...
(given how I bought the lot of them from a steam discount about a year ago)

Glad to see they are still making them. I would love to get Fortress Italy but the price is a bit steep for me.

Jarmo: I've been meaning to give the "new" CM series another try,
These are DRM games since some years (there was no drm at release). I can no longer play CM:SF because the drm (included by a patch): I ended the installation limit, so I broke the dvd and put it in trashbin.
Fuck you Battlefront. I'm happy I didn't buy the following titles, for I dispised about what happened.
