Using Creative ALchemy it seems that you can restore EAX 4.0 without too much of a fuss.
The settings I'm using are just being tested, so keep in mind you may have to fiddle with them while I try and hammer out more specifics.
USE REGISTRY PATH:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Codemasters\Colin McRae Rally 2005\INSTALL_PATH
Install into both Root and Sub folders: False
Buffers: 4
Duration: 25
Maximum Voice Count: 128
Disable Direct Music: False
----------
Tested on a machine with a Creative X-Fi Titanium series.

Seriously? It's a competition to Creative's X-Fi and it's great for music & movies. Gaming is a whole different matter, as their EAX emulation simply sucks.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I could not figure the registry setting out and so resorted to the other option of setting the 'Use Game Path' option which in my case I set to 'C:\Games\GOG.COM\Colin McRae Rally 2005' (This path will probably be different for you). All other settings I left the same and it worked a treat.
Wonder if there is a way of getting Creative to auto recognise the GOG.COM copy of the game without having to add a manual configuration?
* Tested with an Audigy 2 ZS on Vista 64 bit.
