I wrote a review and I can't seem to figure out what's the max number of characters for revs on game pages, so I'll just post it here. Because fuck you, arbitrary limitations.
The best bad FPS
All right, I'll say upfront: The game is great and I really, really enjoy it, but there are some major flaws in the enemy design which needlessly bring the FPS part down.
Let's get the bad stuff out of the way so I can get to the good things: The vast majority of enemies is just not very fun to fight. They are annoying, enemies shooting projectiles are 100% accurate (most weapons are projectile-based so it's theoretically possible to dodge, but they can always predict with uncanny accuracy where are you going to be. Which sounds cool on paper, but it's just infuriating in reality, especially with the speed most projectiles move with.) Combine that with how much does the game love to spawn enemies behind you, spawn so many enemies in a row so you begin to think they're going to spawn infinitely, it's ... It's a shame, really. Why?
Well, because shooting is really satisfying and fun, and I love the guns + magic mechanics - if I'm going to simplify it, by choosing a gun you choose primary fire and by choosing a spell you're choosing the secondary fire. Thing is, spells have really diverse and interesting effects - I'll let you figure it out for yourself, but the game is really innovative in this respect.
And from there, the game is only getting better. The sound assets are just amazing, creating really hefty atmosphere - I wouldn't go as far sa calling the game scary, but it's definitely quite unnerving and keeps you on the edge. It would be much more on the scary side if the game didn't deem it necessary to throw about half a million enemies every time you look at it funny, but what the hell, itworks. Anyway, when you combine this with utterly amazing level design, you just get something that's joy to immerse yourself in and explore. Oh, level design - it's somewhere on the middle road between modern linear shooter and oldish maze-like FPS games, and that works really well for it. The game rewards exploration (altho sometimes it rewards it with near to infinite number of those annoying leaping enemies, grrr), there are secrets, and the levels are very pleasant to look at, even today.
And... That's pretty much all I have to say about it, really. Overall I like the game quite a bit. Shooting has nothing on games like Blood or Duke3d, but game itself is quite unique and full of fairly well executed, cool ideas. So... Yeah, for 6 bucks, get it if you like horror-themed FPS games. It's well worth the price.
