I recently downloaded Dark Athena and received a message stating the dvm.dll file was not downloaded to my computer. This happens every time I try to run the game. I found the file online via an old entry in the Deep Silver forums about Risen. I extracted the file to the Dark Athena directory, but the game still thinks the file is not on my computer.

What should I do to get the dvm.dll file onto my computer so Dark Athena finds it properly?
Probably your anti-virus picked it up as a false positive and removed it. There are a number of threads about this in the Riddick forum. Try adding the game folder to your whitelist/exceptions for your anti-virus and see if you can restore the file from the anti-virus. If you can't restore it, do a re-install.
This is actually my second time installing the game after the same error message appeared. I have McAfee Internet Security on my computer, but I'm still not able to see if any whitelist options exists with the software. In this case of retrieving the dvm.dll file, I might as well delete the virus protection from my computer.

Is AVG still a decent free alternative to virus protection, or should I just go without the protection?

I believe AVG may also pick it up as a false positive. It definitely used to, but I don't know if it still does.

You don't want to have no protection, but if you can use an anti-virus that allows you to set up exceptions/whitelist then this will help.

As a test, you could disable the anti-virus, then re-install and see if it works. Then re-enable the anti-virus and add the exception. I don't use McAfee myself (I'm on Avast!), so I don't know how it works.
This is a late reply to the question, as it seems as though my problem with the false positive was solved. I have AVG installed, and I can play Riddick now. Supposedly, AVG didn't pick up on the false positive, allowing me to run the program with no issues.

Thanks again for the insight on the problem.

Make sure you download all parts of the installer. The first part should be a 2MB exe file, then you have 4 1.5GB .bin files. Download them all to the same location, and you should be able to install it. If it still can't find one of them, verify that there isn't any (1) in the name. They should be setup_chronicles_of_riddick_2.0.0.10.exe and setup_chronicles_of_riddick_2.0.0.10-#.bin
