In order to connect to game servers, the game says I need to activate a game key. I have no idea where the game key is. I didn't think GOG did this sort of thing.

Go to Chaos Reborn in your library and click on 'View Downloads' then on 'More' then on 'Serial keys'

Yes. Singleplayer works without it.

On your GOG library here on the website, click on the game, than click on the 'More" drop down menu and on 'Serial keys'.
