It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Despite the readme.pdf that says this is version 1.1, it appears to be 1.0. You can easily tell once you start a game. Click the (right side of the screen) Rankings/Search button on the bottom half of the button (over the word Search). The panel that pops out should be the Search: Sites panel that gives you the ability to turn on/off the icons associated with a site so they display on the main gameboard. If you select ALL, and exit the panel, you should now see 3 icons on each and every board square.

This was fixed in version 1.1 for Chaos Overlords from New World Computing. I wonder if GOG forgot to apply the patch?

Thanks for the highlight.
I was remembering the 'search' feature but couldn't find it. This is the explanation.

Thanks! It's now much better. Still one problem remaining (I mentioned it in a support ticket but not here)

Help doesn't work. That is, there is a Help | Help Topics menu item that doesn't work. It works if I copy in my patched original .EXE but not from the GOG version. It really helps to have that Chaos.hlp file when playing this game, since there are so many odd little things to remember (or forget!)
