I remember when I used to play this game as a kid, I'd play for a very long time but I only unlocked like 2 cars and that's it.
Is there some special criteria to unlock more cars?

Also, I remember that the game unlocks further maps based on your rank, but how is rank calculated? Like, I'd race a match, win, but then it would not be enough points to rank up...
What criteria is there for the ranking up?
Unlocking cars is a random thing in Carmageddon but it definitely helps if you personally waste an opponent. I unlocked two cars in the original game just now and basically it was just luck of the draw :D

As far as rank being calculated, I think that has more to do with how many pedestrians/animals you kill during a given race. I notice the more I kill, the higher in rank I advance.

Whenever you destroy a car in a race, there's a small percentage that you'll be able to drive that car.

The rank is calculated from how much money you earn during the race. To get better ranks, you should drive around and get money pick-ups, kill the other cars and run over pedestrians.
Ooooooh. I usually just complete the race. Sure I go off-track sometimes to drive over pedestrians and to waste the other opponents, but mostly I just try to finish the race haha. Didn't know I had to do the opposite! I'm not very good at driving over the pedestrians since they run away lol
Ranks - atter finishing a race, your rank will go up by one grade per every 20000 points (max 5 per one race).

Cars - according to Carmageddon Tips Book:
- first, you need to reach certain rank
- second, you need to waste opponent's car
- third, there is a 50% chance of unlocking it

Here's the unlockables:
Rank 89 - Annihilator, Tashita, Grunge Buster
Rank 55 - The Twister, The Bear
Rank 38 - Towmeister, Caddy Fat Cat
Rank 21 - The Plow
Rank 09 - Suppressor (unlike others, 100% chance)
Rank 01 - All cars unlocked

No info for Splat Pack, but rules are the same - you can only unlock some cars, but all will be unlocked at the end.

I have never seen anybody that has won a race just driving the circuit...that is a new one.

I have done all peds once but usually just destroy all the other cars while i go exploring and racking up time.

The game rewards you for any kind of shit. Like scaring people off roofs. Sneak up on a blind guy and then use your horn (h).

You probably already know the starter guy is worth 1000 credits, but when you finish a lap first he net you 2000 credits instead. I wonder if his valve increase with each finish lap, but he never survives that long.

The Flag Ped:Running him over sometimes gives you 1000 to up to 4000 credits.

Wow thank you for this information!

When I was playing as a kid, I always wondered how the hell you unlocked vehicles as it seemed completely random. I remember trying to unlock a vehicle that I later found out wasn't unlockable, so I used the cheat instead and played with alll the cars.

On the screen where you select race and car etc type KEVWOZEAR

This unlocks ALL cars :)
Cool! Does that work for the original game?
Aw, that cheat doesn't work in neither the original nor the splat pack :(
Maybe you are typing this cheat is a wrong place? It should be entered on a stage preview screen - when you start a new game and see "Maim Street" (original) or "Mayan Mayhem" (Splat Pack), enter cheat here, and it should work. It works for me.
