Played ths game year's ago and I want to play it again, so I just bought it here on Gog
I started the game and I found it looking horrible :(
So I came to this forum and I saw that there was some 3DFX mode that would make it nicer.
Now all I see is people telling to start the game in Harwarde mode... I tried but it still looks the same :(
I tried some different settings in "Graphic setup mode" but that doesn't seem to help either.

So can anyone plz tell me... step by step... what I need to do so I can run this game with acceptable gfx instead of some pixels?

Many thnx!

Click Start, navigate to "All Programs\GOG.com\Carmageddon\Carmageddon" and click on "Carmageddon (Hardware Mode)"
The installer does add the proper shortcuts to the start menu, but it is possible that the desktop only gets the software mode shortcuts. It's also possible that the game will be slow, in which case take a look here for more detailed instructions on how to get it working.
Enjoy your races, and don't forget to hang on to your helmet.

Well, thnx for the advice... but that is pretty much how I already did it... and ok, I might have exaggerated about how bad it looks... but it's just that I saw some youtube clips that had way better gfx then what I have now. For instance this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCxtKviaiko

With the exception of the mouse cursor, this was more or less my experience with nGlide/3DFX version of carmageddon as well.
Unfortunately, I don't recall doing anything different from what was suggested in the thread I linked. Hopefully someone else will have another suggestion :/
Have you tried the Windows version? It's not installed by default, but there is a separate patch on downloads page. On my PC, basic DOS version has horrible graphics, 3DFX version is slow and Windows version works perfectly.
Firstly, get nGlide 1.00 installed and then remove/rename all of the glide2x.dll and glide2x.ovl files from the DOSBox folder. There are also glide2x.dll and glide2x.ovl files in the CARMA and CARSPLAT folders too but for me I have to keep them else the game won't start (I'm using my own custom portable installation of DOSBox rather than the GOG installer version, but I did extract the game contents and DOSBox conf files from the GOG installer so it is, for all intents and purposes, the same game, just with my own DOSBox setup.

Once you've done this, use the nglide_config.exe that comes with nGlide 1.00 and choose your resolution. I think you should be able to cope with 1024x768 fine, but higher resolutions would need higher spec hardware so you'll have to try out various settings to see how high you can push it whilst keeping the game playable.

Then, as long as you use the hardware mode (3DFX) shortcut, it should then use the higher resolution and look better as textures keep their detail as they get smaller when moving away from you, giving the game a crisper, finer level of detail.

You might also want to try giving output=openglnb in the game's 3DFX DOSBox conf files.

There are similar details here: http://www.gog.com/forum/carmageddon/carmageddon_hq_how_to

Make sure you are using the dosboxCARMA3dfx.conf and dosboxCARSPLAT3dfx.conf files so that 3DFX mode is used (the hardware mode shortcuts should be using them anyway).
