So, the game has a bad framerate when run in hardware mode. To my eyes it looks like 15 fps. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong?
I can't run the game out of hardware mode, because the screen resolution turns ridiculously small, and I can't figure out how to chage it. I also tried the Windows 95 patch, but with that the game crashes on startup no matter what.

My specs:
64 bit Windows Vista Home Basic
AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core 4400+
NVIDIA GeForce GT 200
4 Gb of RAM

The problem is getting increasingly worse as I move to the higher levels. The framerate is absolutely ABYSMAL in Industrial Injury. The whole game just slows down into a slideshow! What the hell am I doing wrong?
What resolution are your running it at in hardware mode? The 3DFX emulation along with dosbox has some CPU overhead and your processor is kind of dated. If you are running in hardware mode you should probably stick to 1024X768 or below. If you were interested in enlarging the screen size with software mode I believe the plus key increases size.

If the above doesn't work out for you it might be best to focus on getting the Win95 version working due to the lower overhead requirement.

My screen resolution in hardware mode is exactly 1024x768. I know that I can control the screen size with plus and minus buttons, but it doesn't change the resolution. I guess I confused those two terms in the first post. As for the Win95 version, I have no clue how to get it to not crash instantly. I tried to run it in a compatiblity mode, but no luck. I tried to run it as administrator, but no luck. Damn you Vista.....
What do you mean under "no luck"?
If the installer started but couldn't finished, it is a common problem and not affect the result.
Just see your Start menu and you can find an icon with Carnageddon (Windows Version) label.
Nevermind

By "no luck", I mean when I try to play the Win95 version, it crashes instantly on startup.
Just asking, But did you run the Windows 95 patch installer under Administrator?

Yep, I did. Didn't prevent the crashing.
Hi!
I had the similar issue with a totaly different configuration. It seems to me that the Graphic mode setup has nothing to do with the hardware mode, so you have to setup it manually.
The solution to me was editing the dosboxCARMA3dfx.conf file: changeing the "output=surface" to "output=OpenGLnb" did the trick. Also I've switched "scaler=normalx2" to "scaler=none".
The mentioned fiile by default is in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Carmageddon" folder. You have to have administrator privileges to access it.
That's it.
I hope it helps!

I have already messed with the 3dfx configuration file, but I only tried frameskip. Gotta try that setting right now. Thanks!

I have the same issue, I was quite happy with the performance but it became almost unplayable as I reached Industrial Injury -- 17 FPS at the start line :(
I tried all the suggestions found in the forum, from installing nglide, removing the DLLs, etc. to no avail. It doesn't change anything.

I am having the bad framerate problem, but editing this conf file won't make any difference as I'm on a Mac and am running the game in the Carma / Carsplat folder within the Mac version of DOSBox. is there some place I can link the conf file to the EXE?
I'm also having serious gameplay problems due to low framerate. It's absolutely unplayable like this. I tried the Windows 95 patch, and the gameplay worked really well but it allways crashes after the first level (in both Carma 1 and the Splat Pack). And regarding editing the dosboxCARMA3dfx.conf file, exactly how do I do that?
If anyone comes up with a good solution, please tell.
I'm running Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit, with an AMD Phenom II P960 Quad-Core 1.8 GHz and 8 GB RAM.
