GOG's Caesar III game card lists multi-player capability, but I'm pretty sure the retail version in '98 was single-player only. Is that a typo, or did gog modify this distribution to add multiplayer? If so, how does it work?

I'm inclined to guess that it's a typo, since that's a pretty impressive feature addition to not even merit a mention in the game description. . .

The 98 version was definitely single player.

I have the gog version and it's single player as well, unless I'm totally missing something.

You're not missing anything, Caesar III is SP only; showing it to be multiplayer-compatible is really a typo.
Hopefully, someone from the staff will come around here, notice this thread and fix that, as it is indeed misleading.

gog fixed the typo, the mutiplayer bit in the game card was removed.
