In the original there was a check point system, no free saving. Is it the same in the TC?

Yes. There are very few changes made to Terminal Cut and almost all of them are related to compatibility with modern operating systems and graphics (resolution, pre-rendered cutscenes etc.)

Not only that, all saves you have from the original still apply to Terminal Cut. The save location changed, though (in your Documents rather than in the game directory)
