It's a bit awkward and took me a while: you have to use the "bird's eye" button (default Left Trigger on the controller).

I've been using the PS4 controller. Since I use Verok's wrapper, which messes with the controller, I have to run DS4 Windows to make it work, but I hear it works natively if you don't use any mods. I think the XBox One controller works too - no reason not to, if the DS4 works, right? - but haven't tested it yet.

I don't own an Xbox controller so can't confirm, but there IS a reason why it wouldn't work.

Controllers like the DS4 use a protocol called DirectInput, whereas controllers like the Xbox controller use XInput. XInput was introduced in 2005 alongside the release of the Xbox 360 and it has since become the standard protocol for Windows, so any controllers that are designed for use on the PC, including the Xbox controllers, use XInput. The DS4 however uses the older DirectInput standard, which is why if you want to use a DS4 with most PC games, you need to run an application like DS4Windows to basically trick the PC into thinking it's an Xbox controller.

Blood Omen was released in 1997, some 8 years before XInput was introduced, and therefore did not support XInput at the time of first release. I'm unsure if GOG's wrapper they use to make the game run on modern systems includes XInput support or not, but if it doesn't, it's entirely possible Xbox controllers wouldn't work just straight out of the box. I guess it depends exactly how close the game is to the original PC release. The game has no issue using a DS4 controller without any mods applied, meaning it definitely supports DirectInput, but I'm unsure about XInput.

No, Sony (exactly from Sony) controllers use Xinput. it is why they recognised as Xbox controllers. And only some games can detect them as DS (wired only, sometimes only for v1, cause DS v2 use differ HWID for no reason, it not so differ itself).

GOG put dinput-xinput wrapper dll. So Xinput controllers work. But game naively support Dinput aka General Plug-n-Play controllers. Better have and use them instead. If you can find to buy "digital" pad (no analog sticks) - better buy this one.
That make him compatible with every oldest games.

I don't know where you are getting your information from you're incorrect. DualShock 4 controllers are not detected as Xbox controllers. They are detected as generic controllers. They do not use XInput, they use DirectInput. You need to run an application in the background like DS4Windows or something similar in order to make the PC think it's an Xbox controller. For Steam games, Steam also offers some (hit or miss) PlayStation controller support.

You need that wrappers(emulators)(SteamInput) for differ reasons for differ games. Same as for Xbox unofficial x360ce wrapper. Xinout not mean Microsoft-only.
There is no points to make DS work as Xbox. Windows itself properly detect DS controllers cause they Xinput actually. But that not mean they work properly in every games, Xinput ones too sometimes. Sometimes even DS buttons are supported in some Xinput-games - only(?) for wired connected DS (without that wrappers. right?). That's not possible in Dinput mode.

Was able to finish it up with just the keyboard.

I have a customizable controller, but the idea of customizing it just seems daunting.

I remember seeing a lot of comments about slowdown, but the game seemed to play how I remember it... 20 years ago.

This is PC, not console. You should bind gamepad manually in every games. Thats how it work with Dinput. Even for old Microsoft controllers before Xbox360. And since this is +wrappers but not native Xinput game - it still should be like that.

Maybe even better rename dinput.dll in game fodler and connect General Dinput PnP controller... I still not buy game cant say what is dinput.dll do and what you can put in dixi.ini.
