I downloaded PS and there's no sound - at all. I can run the game in dosbox and the sound works, but the game just doesn't just quite as smoothly as it should, even when I up the cycles.

If you check the start menu, gog.com folder for this gamedoes it have a setup file?
Try running it with a newer dosbox release.
To get sound you must run it in dosbox. Windows XP, Vista,and 7 are Windows NT based. Versions 5.1,6.0,and 6.1 The NTDVM layer blocks direct hardware access preventing the sound files from running except for PC speaker sound. Dosbox emulates a FreeDOS install with a SB16 as configured by GOG.com. The dos game will not run on x64 windows due to the 16-bit Emulation layers being removed and replaced by a 32-bit emulation layer.

DOSBox doesn't emulates a FreeDOS install. DOSBox has its own DOSBox DOS.

I guess this response is late, but I never got sound in windows. But it's just as well, because everything is working fine in DOSbox. Thanks for all the replies.
My old fingers love to type WASD without even thinking. Unfortunately that doesn't work in Blake Stone, but as soon as you hit the "S" key it turns the sound off. Try toggling the "S" key a couple times and see if sound comes back on.
Update: this was never "solved," actually. When I say that the game runs through "windows," I mean that I'm clicking on the .exe icon from the GOG folder which runs the game through GOG's dosbox emulation. Some sounds work: such as guns, death sounds, and doors. No other sound and no music.

I don't know why I said that the game is working "fine" when I load dosbox manually, and start the game from there. It's still choppy, and so is Aliens of Gold.

Playing a game that looks like this (VGA) on a pretty modern computer is very irksome. Back in 1994 or so when I first played this game (AOG) on a 486, it ran flawlessly from what I remember. I should be able to play this WITH sound and WITH a good framerate combined.
I chatted up a friend on facebook and found out what I should do and now both AOG and PS run perfectly with full sound and everything. I opened up dosbox options config file (i didn't know how to do this before *facepalm*) and changed cycles to "max" but that didn't fix things. Then I just started messing around with random settings, and after I changed core to "dynamic," the games started running ultra smoothly.

NTVDM in XP+ emulates a Soundblaster card.

Windows 2000 and below did not (but you could use VDMSound to do so).

You can also use VDMSound in XP for better sound quality.

Don't use any of those solutions though since DOSBox is a much better solution.
