Jeffpiatt: To get sound you must run it in dosbox. Windows XP, Vista, and 7 are Windows NT based. Versions 5.1,6.0,and 6.1 The NTDVM layer blocks direct hardware access preventing the sound files from running except for PC speaker sound. Dosbox emulates a FreeDOS install with a SB16 as configured by GOG.com. The dos game will not run on x64 windows due to the 16-bit Emulation layers being removed and replaced by a 32-bit emulation layer.
NTVDM in XP+ emulates a Soundblaster card.
Windows 2000 and below did not (but you could use VDMSound to do so).
You can also use VDMSound in XP for better sound quality.
Don't use any of those solutions though since DOSBox is a much better solution.
