I'm not running the version from GOG but from the original dos version from way back when. I cannot get the game to run smoothly by increasing the cycles. If I increase too much, the game starts to slow to a crawl with the music and sound lagging severely. I can get both Wolf3D and Planet Strike to run fine in DOSbox by increasing the cycles, but not AOG. What gives? Would I have better luck with the GOG version?

-thanks.

I haven't played it via GOG yet, but at least you would have the community to ask and GOG support if you ran into any issues
The advantage to the gog.com download is that the dosbox is pre configured to run on most modern windows pc's.
People, stop fiddling with cycles. It doesn't help that much.

Here's what you need to do:

go to Program Files/GOG.com/Blake Stone Aliens of Gold

open in wordpad dosboxBlakeAOG.conf

find section [cpu], and lines core= and cycles=.

make'em look like this:

core=auto
cycles=max

File>Save, close. Enjoy Blake Stone.

Really, manually correcting things in .conf files is way more effective than relying on the GOG's settings application.

The config file is already set that way. But when I run the game through a manual dosbox load, the settings reset to whatever they were before. Running the game through the windows icon means that I don't get sound. Poo.

That's very strange! I'd reccomend trying to run the game with D-Fend Reloaded, the interface for DOSBox, and checking the settings in Blake's SETUP.
