I've been looking around the forum for a bit, and while I didn't find a concrete answer, it seems to be agreed that nglide is the best video setting. Apparently, you need to use the r3Dfx Voodoo 1-2 setting to make use of it. Beyond that, nothing's really clear.

A bit of searching suggests that nglide is some sort of third party program that you need to download.

It would be appreciated if someone could post a clear guide on how to get and use this nglide thing with as little ambiguity as possible. Or if that isn't the ideal setting, what is?

«nGlide is a 3Dfx Voodoo Glide wrapper. It allows you to play games designed for 3Dfx Glide API without the need for having 3Dfx Voodoo graphics card.»
In other words, after having downloaded and installed it, you can set the game options and force it to use an hardware (3Dfx) you acctually haven't got.
I did some poking around in the folders and found that there already are a few nglide files. Did it already come with the game, or does it still need to be downloaded?

I am not sure. It's probably packed with the game to offer better performance. I bought BoD but I've never downloaded it.
nGlide is included in the Blade of Darkness installer. There should be a "nGlide settings" shortcut in the Start Menu, or you can use the nglide_config.exe in the game's /Bin/ subfolder. You shouldn't need to do anything else. Note that nGlide only functions when using the "r3Dfx Voodoo 1-2" option in the setup menu. If you want to use OpenGL, for instance, you don't even need to configure it. (Though you'll still need to configure OpenGL.)

It's enabled by default when you install the game, also.

Yeah, I found that before. Thanks for the clarification.

Wut?

Anyway, no, nglide is not the best setting at all. Poor FPS and FPS drops, especially when you're near a light source (like a torch or a camp fire).

Install https://www.moddb.com/games/severance-blade-of-darkness/downloads/newer-opengl-raster

Not sure if there's a newer one.

Two crashes I've experienced while using this...

1) Forge of Xshatra

There's a corridor near the end of a level with a fallen knight (door closes as soon as you enter it). It often crashes if you fight in this corridor.

2) Beginning of Ianna's temple

Crashes every time on the opening cutscene of this level. You have to skip it unfortunately.

3) Might also crash in Amazon's first level when you open the temple door

That's what I read at least, have yet to play as this character.

P.S. Turn down brightness, gamma and contrast. The default settings make the game way too bright and washed out. This game has very overt horror elements and the game's not supposed to look like it does out of the box.
