Ran into a repeating problem where the only olution that I found is to 100% uninstall and reinstall the game.

After I had to end the game via the taask manager at one point, I found that no missions would load (stuck on the black screen with progress wheel in the top left), if I travel to another system, no missions pop up and the info about the systems (society level etc ) is missing, single player skirmish won't come up (no map or lance selection appearing on screen etc) and a test run of the campign sits on day 1 and doesn't budge.

Now while this issue is 'technically' solved, I'm hoping somebody has an idea about fixing it without me having to download another 12 gigs.
