Did anyone try playing it in Wine? Developers didn't release a Linux version, and there is no entry for it in the Wine HQ since the game is fairly new. I don't want to buy it unless it's playable.

I read on Steam discussiosn that the creator is focusing on this and in this order after release:
1) Fixing bugs
2) Completing mod kit
3) Support cross-platform

Your best bet it is likely to purchase at Humble Store to get a Steam key, that way you have 2 different versions that likely will have Linux support. GOG will likely not have Linux support (only my guess) and I assume Wine is an emulation so better be safe with the others.

Thanks. If they plan cross platform support, I don't mind buying it from the Humble Store. I don't use Steam so Steam key isn't relevant, but HB version is DRM free (https://humblebundle.com/store/p/banished_storefront) and they'll probably add a Linux version automatically when it will come out. That already happened to me once - I bought Papers Please while it was Windows only, and HB added a Linux version to my account right after it was released.

Here's a comment by cantares on steam:
It runs nicely with WINE... You MUST however move the VideoDX11-*.dll to somewhere else or delete it.. WINE crashes when trying to initialize with DX11, DX9 works fine though.
According to his profile he has been playing the Steam version but I doubt there's a difference with Humble's or GOG's.

Unfortunately I could only find one person who claimed to have played it directly instead of a secondary source. My suggestion is to purchase the Humble version as that's DRM-free but with the advantage of possible Linux support in the future, at least a faster future than GOG's possible support.

I just bought the game and run it in wine on OS X. Not the same situation as you but shouldn't be too different either. Everything seems to work and it hasn't crashed for me yet, but I don't have music. My sound does work though.
I have it working on Fedora 20 right now. This is my primary computer. I am using Crossover (Wine). I had to move the .dll and install Direct X 9 and Direct X 9 runtime - modern. After that, the game works fine.... I even have sound :)
Thanks. Can you please file a Wine HQ entry for this?
There is a topic about this on reddit and it has instructions for running Banished in Wine on Linux and on the Mac.

Search for reddit topic /r/Banished/comments/1y8gaj/banished_in_wine/

Also, the lead developer for Banished has announced in his blog that he is planning ports to OS X and Linux.
