A question just occurred to me: Is it possible for a multiplayer game to desync?

(A desync is when the running copies of the game no longer have the same idea of the game state.)
I'm not entirely certain whether to call it desync, but some weird things tend to happen in multiplayer games. I have played Baldur's Gate I and II and Icewind Dale I and II through multiplayer. What I have experienced so far:
- the one that's hosting the game has basically a normal experience, close to singleplayer.
- the players that join the game can see some odd behaviour, often quite different for each player.
- the most common thing is what I call teleportation, i.e. characters sometimes freeze and then appear where they were going. This one will surprise those that haven't played IE games in multiplayer before, especially when an enemy suddenly appears before them.
- connected to the previous one is melee attacks from a distance. The host sees you attacking from close range, but you see your character standing in place instead of moving and then attacking (e.g. with a sword).
- dead characters remaining alive, only visually. Sometimes they can be attacked, but won't take damage etc.
- characters clumping together in a tight space, sometimes shoving eachother and teleporting around.
- characters' animation loop, especially the death animation.
- what's happening in the host's game is what truly counts.

This one is not an odd behaviour, but a little thing that you can annoy your party members with:
- talking to another player's character will cause them to freeze for a short while.

There are probably more odd things that can occurr through multiplayer in IE games, but all of this can create a lot of silly and memorable situations.
