so patch 6 made a few changes and one of those is the way the anvil works [see images]
if you are trying to figure it out the steps now are;
1 right click the anvil [press combine] then right click one of the items in your inventory that you want to try and combine
2 now that the 1st item is in the first slot you can just drag and drop the 2nd item into the 2nd slot and press the button to make your spear
honestly!
