Was recently playing this and while searching for different stuff I found numerous references to followers not having certain skills and the like. I tried to change their Auto level scheme (button on the character screen, top right) until I realized: you can just select no scheme and pick their stats and skills manually.

Just wanted to mention this in case somebody else wants to have a magical dog.
