Hey Guys,

I used to play Arcanum when it came out, always as technological character, though.
After picking it back up here, I wanted to try out a mage for once.

My question is: Is there any way of working around my elf's 40 magical aptitude to pick up Jayna? The herbological ingredients clog up my inventory and I refuse to either learn herbology or trow them out.
I intend to go all magical aptitude throughout the game, so maybe picking up Jayne for her schematics is useless anyway? Do Healing Salves and fatigue restorers just poof out on me at 100 mag apt anyway?

But i could still sell the stuff... aww man, my hoarder's reflexes and former technological player habits are getting the better of me here...

I would suggest to stop immediately investing into magic and start balancing out towards the technological skills (picklocks or, even better new schematics). You may also try to buy a few technological tomes in Tarant's University (cost a lot, weights a ton). And embrace the brave new world as a techo mage!

Lastly you may try to invest heavily into peruasion (mastery) but by the time you get it Jayna will seem a bit outdated level wise. And it's not 100% guarantee unless only you'll also have 20 in charisma.

P.S. The tomes are useful for schematics' particular discipline only I think. But who knows maybe it'll help to convince Jayna.

Ok, first off I'm gonna go check if they have TechnoMage here on GOG...

But I want her to clear up my inventory NOW >_<
I'm not above using a character editor to cheat my aptitude accordingly just to get her, then reverse to what it's now. That's almost like I had spent a thought on what I want beforehand...
Is there an editor or something like that?

What's up with the inventory? Just store it out into some chest in any hotel or hire a half-ogre from the first village, he is very strong and overall almost excellent fighter.
I picked Jayna rather late and doing just fine, I had to invest into persuasion only to get back for her.

There is an editor for Arcanum. I just don't know what do you need it for exactly and I personally don't use editors, the only exception is for workaround game breaking bugs. So can't help you with editor knowledge, sorry. And I'm also just a typical thief, no magic trickstery :)

Jayna requires you to have a TA of at least 5 to join* your party. Alternately, you could have 20 CH and Persuasion mastery; but that's an endgame position, by which time she'll probably be useless to you anyway.

So your likely options are to drop your MA substantially (learning Repair is good for this), start over and grab her while your TA is high enough, or use a cheat (such as a game editor to change her parameters, so that she's still willing to join you).

*And rejoin, after any main quest plot points that require you to leave your followers behind to proceed. Although, with the patch, there are talking-based ways around that requirement.

Not really - you can meet Wlloughsby and Perrimanwhen you return from Qintarra and are about to visit Caladon for the first time. Plotwise, this is roughly about the halfway point for the game. If you have 18 charisma and full persuasion by then, persuasion mastery is reachable. Of course, Jayna would still be low levelled (along with Vollinger and Geoffrey), but those can be worked around (*cough* Roseborough *cough*)

Having replayed arcanum, I noticed that a full tech aptitude makes magic potions completely ineffective, and I think the same may apply to tech-based salves for magic characters (I'll have to check, give me a few hours) But if you're going full MA, you're better off with Virgil, Perriman and even Raven (and possibly Dante too) for healers.Jayna was made for full tech characters since, as you may know by now, all 4 magick healers as well as typical health potions are ineffective on full tech characters

charlie81, what are you alluding to in regards to Roseborough? I don't get the reference ^^

Also, for now I'll try out the Arcanum editor, maybe I can tweak Jayna to wanna join me anyway or I temporarily up my CH and persuasion, whichever turns out more stable.
I just like having her around for her schematics, it rounds off the party really well. I also like the idea of having Magnus and Sebastian around, they satisfy my hoarding tendencies. Virgil does all the magickal healing I need, in theory more than I need. I'm the Diplomage, I stand back and watch, maybe cast some spells, while my private army is up front having at it.

Assuming you're playing vanilla Arcanum, you can keep talking to Jason Guy at Roseborough. Some would say its an exploit, bu considering how late it is in-game, and that you're most likely going to the Void after you leave the inn, it feels like a nice opportunity for the player to quickly level himself and his party up before entering the endgame.

No. There's no workaround.
Jayna's requirement (10 TA) doesn't depend on your alignment therefore to be Master of Persuasion or 20 CH, or even 20 BE or 20 IN or whatever, will do absolutely nothing (tested and confirmed ingame).

The only way to get Jayna is to have 10 TA, but if you have to put points in technological aptitudes then why not just learn Herbology?
Jayna is a melee companion and not that strong, if you edit her I suggest you swap her Melee for Bow (and equip her with a pyrotechnic bow then she'll rock I assure you).
