I've read that I should see the value or damage of the attack when in combat, I'm not seeing that when I play though. Is this normal?

Yes, it's normal. You can activate it in the video section of the options screen by setting Floats to Verbose.

Ah. I always take a look at game options before I start but I figured verbose would be like fallout where it would fill my screen with prose about combat.
