Um, not to be picky, and I'm willing to pay for stability and extras, but isn't this game abandonware? Shouldn't it be free (or at least cheaper)?

Don't post links to illegal software downloads, please. Abandonware is still not legal. Also, the game is being sold and the rights holder is enforcing their rights to the game by giving us permission to do so.

Thanks for your understanding.

I dont mind paying for a product i would spend hours in and that the company that earns it gets the money for it.

Thanks for the information; I didn't know this. Usually that site takes down content whose rights belong to someone and redirects to the seller, I always thought that their site is perfectly legal.

illegal since gog bought the rights? lol.

No, they don't own the rights: developer / publisher .......... DreamForge Intertainment / Ubisoft. Further more GOG has asked that no abandonware links be posted even for games that aren't available for sale anywhere.

This is a grey area...some area's of the world no one gives a rats @1# if you download and use

Could you get arrested or fined? Hmm.. most likely no

Could you get into trouble with your ISP? Yes, if they catch you, you be warned and eventually shut off.

It's up to the owner of the software if they want to press charges against the web site offering the free downloads.

Same goes for all ROMS and it's mostly a moral thing if anything, if you feel guilty when you steal then don't download abandonware..

There is nothing grey about this. The game is commercial software, sold by consent of the owners, creators, and publishers. You may or may not face consequences if you steal it, but don't kid yourself that it's a grey area. It's illegal, period.

then guess why they dont want abandonware-links here, i wanted to say. i might say, that every single game gets sold here, once was abandonware shivering in the endless space of noncommercial reproduction by legal filesharing. just to be honest. so "no abandonware-links" is like "dont kick my mule". but who cares? just dont post nonsense like abandonware is illegal.

definition of abandonware: it is ignored by the owner, and as such product support and possibly copyright enforcement are also "abandoned". It can refer to a product that is no longer available for legal purchase, over the age where the product creator feels an obligation to continue to support it, or where operating systems or hardware platforms have evolved to such a degree that the creator feels continued support cannot be financially justified. In such cases, copyright and support issues are ignored. period.

The main reason you should buy this version is for the real time voice acting. The abadonware version doesn't have the voices and cute scenes.
As far as I'm concerned there's no such thing as "abandonware". Number 1, it's in wikipedia. Anything in wikipedia needs to be looked at carefuly, as it's full of errors, mistakes, and false information. And number 2, seriously? We feel the need to declare something abandoned so we can feel good about stealing it? I read one abandonware site that said anything older than four years can be considered abandonware... now that's funny.

The King's Quest series has been for sale for many, many years. It's been re-released many, many times. Even in the past few years before gog.com even existed. Yet, oh, it's still abandonware... yeah, okay, whatever you say. Want more examples of other games? I have plenty.

It can be a grey area when the law is concerned. For example, downloading some things here in the U.S. would get me into trouble. Have my ISP disconnect me, and maybe some other things depending on how much I did it. Now if I was in Canada and downloaded the same stuff, nothing would happen as it's legal there.

It's not a grey area when it comes to right and wrong. I'm not interested in dumb politicians, I'm not interested in religion, I'm not interested in people's agenda. There is a right and wrong to things in life, and someone either sees that or they don't.

In order to be perfectly legal, the site would have to point people to GOG.com with titles that are available here and can be obtained legally whether for a price or free, or games that are distributed for free by the rights holders. For example, a game like Major Stryker can be obtained for free from 3D Realms' website. Even though it is free, it's not abandonware. 3D Realms owns the rights, and they have decided to offer the game as a free download.
If you really want something from a long way back, have some patience and it might just pop up here.
Here's an example: Worlds of Ultima Martian Dreams and Savage Empire were nearly impossible to get. They were the rarest games in the Ultima series and cost hundreds to get. GOG.com, however, not only got them for us, but they made them free.
Another Ultima example is Ultima VII. If you had a friend who told you he would be able to put Ultima VII on your computer (the game was nearly impossible to run when it was new, and running it in its original form with a more recent computer was a pipe dream) make the game work, give you facsimiles of all the original documentation, and insure you that the game is legally on your computer so you will never be charged with software piracy, wouldn't you give him $5.99? See, it's worth it. If you really do want free games, enjoy the freebies they give you here, and google your favorite rare oldies to see if the publisher is giving the games away on its website. You may be surprised to find you can legally obtain many classics.

There is no such thing as 'legal filesharing' if its sharing a pirated game illegally.

There is no legal definition of 'abandonware'. It is just a buzzword, made up by people sharing the files, that do not have legal rights to share those files.

GOG sucks donkey slong and here's why. They are whoring off of DOSBox which is free. If it wasn't for DOSBox there would be little interest in these older games. Not many folks will build an old 486 running DOS to play these games. Some would, but not many so regardless of what people say about abandonware, GOG is a filthy whore for not developing their own DOS emulator.
