I have just finished the game. The game created tons of auto saves because because you need to go back and forth in tons of areas several times, especially when you try to do all side quests. There are time minders every few meters so there is no need for lots of auto saves.

Where are the saves for this game on the computer?

Patch 1.02:

There is a new autosave feature which will save your game every fifteen minutes (of Earth time) during map transitions as well as before important cinematics. This deprecates the old, broken view-cinematics menu and changes the load game screen. The old save game (Timeminder) menu has not changed.
So that is not really a vanilla feature, but something which was patched in later on and probably was supposed to be polished afterwards but never ended up being.
