Well...i fear i know the anwser but...hope dies last.

I just finished a campaignscen and the last Leader had two really nice items....i can look at them with greed in my eyes but i can't take them...

Is there any way to take something from the Ground during the "last round"?

I feel your pain. But no. Not that I know of.

With enemy heroes you can at least be tricksy and avoid capturing the enemy throne so you have a turn to loot, but leaders? No go.

Fortunately, you generally find more items than you know what to do with anyway if you explore a map carefully.

I admit that in that Frostling campaign scenario I camped 5 stacks outside the Rogue's capital for 10+ turns whilst other stacks were digging up every last bit of treasure from the underground and the islands in the west and shipping it to my heroes. (Since they're Frostlings, I imagine the "send magic item" system actually works through Dire Penguins with oversized backpacks running around stealthily delivering the stuff) That compensated for not getting the leader's items.
I did the same and i got quite a number of Items...the "Problem" is the quality.

I had three or four sites that could give me mystic items...but i got only one mystic mount, the other two sites "only" gave me Spells or 2-3 weaker Items. The Rouge at the other hand had two really good Items...(no idea where the hell he got them because only the basic sites at his capital where allready searched)...a shild with frostaura+other effects and pants with +4defense+other effects...

I want miss them at the long term but it feels...hmm...unfair :)...having those shiny things laying around and no way to get them :)
