I'm getting really tired of waiting for Shadow Magic. First it was delayed by the spectacularly awful PR stunt, now it looks like it's going to be delayed by another Hasbro release.

At this rate it could turn into another HOMM3 and be months before the one game in this series that everybody wants finally comes out.

Meanwhile, I learned that Shrapnel Games has started selling Dominions 3, the other contender for Master of Magic's throne, as a digital download. I would be willing to put up with the inferior graphics of Dominions 3 if the gameplay were better.

The key thing is, I would be playing Singleplayer only. Can anyone give some insight on which is the stronger singleplayer game? Especially someone who's tried Dominions recently patched?
Shadow Magic have the strongest single player because the AI in Dominions 3 will never come up with all the crazy and fun idéas that players do.

Dominions are totally insane. Lots of depth in that one.

Age of Wonders is much more accessible and, dare I say, "casual".

You could judge for yourself. There's demos you can download for Age of Wonders 2 and Dominions 3. Age of Wonders 2 has some differences compared to Shadow Magic, but, for the purposes of a demo, it should give you an idea about the basics of the gameplay.

Personally, I tried the Dominions 3 demo, and while I was impressed by the sheer number of options in the game, the gameplay just didn't really grab me. No idea about a "recently patched" version, but I imagine the underlying gameplay will be fundamentally similiar. Don't let me turn you away from the game, though. It's worth at least trying the demo. Different strokes for different folks...

i tried both. In SM i loved the combat. To me SM is like a sequel to Master of Magic. Yup i said it.

There's also Age of Wonders. For me it is the best strategy game along with Civilization 3. I haven't played AoW: SM yet and I have great expectations, but I don't expect it to dethrone Age of Wonders.
They are different enough that I would recommend you to play both.
ya after SM ill give AOW 1 a chance again.

SM is sooo freaking long
After futzing with the demos for a week, I ended up getting Dominions 3. For 2 reasons:

1. Age of Wonders plays more like Age of Mild Curiosities in comparison. Insane unit upkeep keeps army size low, tiny amount of casting points keeps your mighty spells to a minimum, too much of combat success is in the hands of the random number generator.

Dominions 3, in comparison, has me fielding armies in the hundreds, I can have packs of wizards lobbing fireball after fireball into the enemy ranks, like every AD&D nerd's fantasies come to life, and while you don't have direct control of combat, the results pretty much always make sense as opposed to AoW2's "Wow, bad luck. Your tier-3 super-badass was murdered by those extra-lucky tier-0s. At least it's not a battleship getting sunk by a stoneage archer."

2. Because Dominons 3 is available RIGHT NOW. Meanwhile gog has had the game and the license for weeks but for some retarded reason is STILL delaying release while Impulse customers have been enjoying the full trilogy for weeks. Maybe before the PR stunt I would have waited patiently, but my days as a gog fanboy are over.
Dominions 3 is too much money, the game could be the second coming of Master of Magic for all care. But I am just not willing to pay $55 because i could buy 6 games for that much on GOG.com or elsewhere.
The game was released four years ago and not even one price drop!?!?
Maybe when the price drops I'll buy it, but for right now I will pass......

As much as i love GOG, I agree.. they have been dropping the ball recently. :(
AoW is user friendly and not still charging $55 after all these years.
