Greybriar: As best I could tell (I just fired up AoWSM to refresh my memory), the combat mechanism in Shadow Magic was as I described in the last sentence of my previous post and action points were refilled at the start of a unit's turn, not at the end of its turn.
I politely disagree. If move/action refreshed at the beginning of a unit's turn, then there would be no retaliation at all by units that had moved to their limit... :-)

I have spent many a turn watching my tank-like hero retaliate four times every turn and not been able to move or take an action while surrounded by enemy units. It's rather disheartening, but it is the game mechanic in place in AoW:SM and from your quote, the mechanic that will be in place in AoW:3. Please don't let this feature dissuade you from enjoying the new game.

I prefer AoW 1. <3
I played a bit of SM, but AoW 1... it's magical. Also I can't wait to listen to the soundtrack.

Greybriar: I am concerned about the combat mechanics in Age of Wonders III, particularly this from the latest Developer's Journal:

"Retaliation, Flanking and Guarding

When one unit attacks another with a melee attack, the defending unit will retaliate and strike back. Each time the defender does this, they use up an action point, so once they’ve retaliated 3 times, they won’t be able to retaliate any more. Even worse for the defender, a unit gets it’s action points refilled at the end of its turn. So, after retaliating 3 times, the defender won’t be able to use the unit themselves next turn!"

I feel that action points should be refilled at the start of a unit's turn, not at the end of its turn. Unless that mechanic is changed, I simply will not purchase the game.
If it's at the start of each turn than most players will consume all actions and you would rarely utilize the retaliation feature. On the plus side you would never be overwhelmed (unable to move).

IMO refilling at end is better because it allows you to suppress a unit's turn by throwing cannon fodder at it. I feel this provides a better level of depth; you can stop attacks or entrap units. However it would be interesting to see if the AI is able to leverage this tactic. The main downside I can forsee is getting to a point where you have a turn but cannot do anything. Of course once you get to that point you are probably going to lose anyway.
