I've never played any of the Age of wonders series before. So, I'd like to ask, if it's alright, what is it like? I've loved Heroes of might and magic 3. Is it something like it? Or is it more along the lines of Warcraft 3? (Just guessing)

Also, I'd like to ask the same of Age of wonders shadow magic. Beside graphics and customization, are the mechanics similar? What is the game like too, overall and in comparison?

I played HoMM3 for 100's of hours and loved it. You'll enjoy the AoW games a great deal. The new one is good, but it may not grab your attention the same way as the older ones.

All of the AoW games use the same mechanics as HoMM. You have Heroes with skills, cities with production, resource mines, etc. Everything is turn based.

For single player, AoW:1 has a great campaign. For balance, AoW:SM is the winner. Especially if you add the 1.4 patch. The campaign in AoW:SM is not very good though except to learn the game mechanics. When you're ready to try a PBEM game, PM any of the regular players in this forum.

Thank you so much, Mimo! For helping me out with my question. :)
The main difference (at least to me) between AoW:SM and the HoMM games is that AoW has better (but slower) tactical combat with fewer units. AoW is rules by super units, while HoMM is ruled by super stacks of units.
Also the AI in HoMM is better than in AoW
Global spells also play an important part in AoW:SM.
Both games have many brilliant user made maps, which are far better than those that ships with the games.
I haven't played AoW 3, so I don't know how much that one compares.

Thank you as well! Since Mimo was the solver, I gave you a +1 instead. :)

I just fired up HoMM after playing nothing but AoW:SM for the last couple of years. It's really hard to go back to the checkerboard style combat once you've gotten used to the massive 32 units versus 24 units city sieges of AoW:SM. :)
