I just started playing the game, and during the very first part of the game where you fly the ship toward the Alien Hangar, the game crashes right when I enter the Hangar.
This is the error I get. It doesn't appear to be at all helpful though

Have you tried playing again to see if it occurs more then once? This game seems to be fairly buggy when I came out without any patches from the devs to fix it.

Some guy on the steam forums had the same problem, different area I think but he managed to break the crash cycle by doing something else. So maybe if you try selecting a weapon, going to the main menu or something like that you can get past this bug.
Doh. I didn't try again. Apparently it saved right before it crashed so I didn't even have to replay the very beginning.
I had seen this error using Wine a few times so I just assumed it wouldn't go away.
Also, I noticed that my camera controls were constantly forcing me to look up, and I fixed it by eding Advent Rising/System/Mydefault.ini and disabling the Joystick. There wasn't an option for it in the game...
Yeah sometimes the game will just crash in certain spots, only thing to do is try again and it might work.
I've had that happen fairly frequently. It's too bad there seems to be no solution... seeing a SOLVED tag on this topic made me hope but I can't really say that was true...

It says solved because it solved his problem. When it happens to me, I just boot the game again and chances are it won't crash. What a buggy mess this game is.
Thanks or the joystick tip - apparently the game tries to treat your mouse as a joystick... and then any motion I do with the mouse, that motion continues after the mouse stops, because there isn't a return to 0, like with a joystick, so you're always spinning clockwise or counter clockwise, and always looking up or down.... I hope disabling the joystick works for me!
The odd thing was that I tried playing with a joystick to fix it and I couldn't get the game to use my joystick...
Hi.
When I try to edit my default.ini file, when I go to save it says "Access denied". In other words I can't save the edits. Anyone kn ow why?
Thanks
That one is possibly access restrictions from windows. Did you install the game under C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) by chance? That folder often contains stuff that is important to keep Windows functioning so it restricts access on it to prevent accidental delete/overwrites that break the system.

If you have administrator privileges, you could try rightclicking on the file you're trying to edit, or the Advent Rising folder. Select properties and then go to the Security tab. See if you can change the permissions to include 'write' or 'modify'

The easiest way however is to reinstall the game somewhere else. I keep all my Gog games under C:\Gog for example. Windows doesn't put restrictions on that folder leaving you free to modify without getting pop-ups and blocks all the time.
I have gotten same 3 or 4 times, at transitions. After reloading, it continues onward. I have game on another drive, so C: program files is not the problem. Good to know it is not just my machine ;-)
I'm having the exact same issue about crashing after entering the hangar during the intro scene.

GOG moderators, please remove the "solved" denotion for this error.
I'm experiencing the exact same thing as the OP.
