A great game... Now.

I pre-ordered the game and waited the months since the last-minute delay of the PC version, only to be disgusted by the abhorrent state of the game - bug-riddled, poorly-translated, and generally a mess. No doubt NIS would have left it like that, but after the overwhelming backlash (and doubtless pressure from Nihon Falcom), they actually got about making the game a great title, fixing a lot of the translation issues and turning it into a smooth experience. While there's no excuse for the state the game originally released in, and NIS' hand was likely forced into fixing it, the game is an enjoyable one indeed, a fine example of what an Ys title should be. Hopefully Ys VIX will be released in the US by XSEED so we don't have another repeat of this drama, but if you're coming into the game now, without having experienced the game in its initial form, you'll have a great time.

After bug fixes, this is a good game

Y's VIII took me 22 hours 58 minutes to complete, this included most side missions and collectables. Upon completing the game, I had explored over 95% of the map. There are some New Game+ additions but I've not delved into those and don't plan to. Not because the game isn't fun but because I've experienced the story and that is enough for me. On day one, the game was plagued with many issues. From annoying bugs like screen tearing on my 1080 at low settings, not detecting a controller and worst of all offenders game crashes. It would've been fine if it was few and far between but it wasn't. The game is in a much better state now after 6(!) patches. I played the game with Keyboard and Mouse first but after a patch update, I jumped back onto an Xbox One controller (this is my preference for action games). I have issues that quite often, the camera will focus on female breasts or bum before slowly circulating to their face as they give exposition. Whereas for men, it always starts from one side of their face to the other. It's not Bayonetta level of lewdness, it's average for a Japanese game. Whilst the fighting is fun and plentiful, I do not like how you can't cancel mid-animation to dodge or block an attack. You have to wait for the animation to complete before evading. This makes learning fight patterns frustrating especially if you can see an attack and try to react to it mid combo. It did make me consider my actions more carefully which contradicts my preferred playstyle. Overall it does have a few quirks I don't like, such as the way female characters are treated and the way evasion works, but past that Y's VIII is a fun game. I'd recommend this to anyone.

Great Game! Amazing story!

Maybe because i played this game after the mayor patchs is that i managed to play it without mayor problems. Port was ok to me. The game run smoothly and it was very enjoyable. This is a Y's game with all the letters. great story, great characters and the same action packed RPG. Was, in normal, a little too easy, but the game has many dificulties to choose from. I love the settings, the upgraded graphics to a more actual style were nice too, one can actually see from a distance all the locations from others locations (kind of Dark souls was), when the story progress so adol reached the highest mountain in the game you have a nice view of the whole island, that was a wonderful detail. I loved Dana story and how affect the whole party. I got just a few complains, the game maybe lacks of higher level dungeons, and also lacks replay attractive, I just hope that Falcom keep growing to make more wonderful games as this was. If you like the ARPG or played any other Y's, you will love this.

From bad port to great port.

I played this on PS4 first and avoided the PC port because, well it's not hard to find the port was botched at first, and for months after that- after they delayed it nearly a year. But now, it's a fine port. I played for over 4 hours and there's not been a crash or any notable issues I can see. The game runs super smooth and the enhanced visuals are nice. The game itself? It's an action RPG, a lot of hack and slashing but playing on the higher difficulties will make you have to play smart. You have a dodge that if timed right gives you a quick dodge slowing down time and allowing you to smash the enemies, there's also a flash guard- not sure if there's an ACTUAL guard but the flash guard is similar, but instead of things slowing down you speed up. You can also somehow do both, so I imagine if you got really good at the game you could embarrass a field of enemies. Visually, well it's a port of a port- originally on the Playstation Vita then PS4, then PC. I didn't play the vita version but being aware OF the Vita's abilities- for the Vita it's not groundbreaking visually but it's pretty enough to get the point across. Runs at 60fps and has an in built super sampling which is nice if you don't know how to do that on your machine. The music to this game is great. It's got one of my favorite game songs of all time that I fell in love with rather quickly. Look up on youtube "Sunshine Coastline" it's so good. The voice acting is good/passable after they redid it- well the VA was never the problem, it was the translation that was improved. It includes JP audio if that's more your thing. EN is more useful since the characters callout things in gameplay like enemies being weak to characters or items to harvest. The short is, a once broken port is now a very solid one that's also improved in performance & visually above all other versions. If you're interested, it's worth a play.

Better now than ever!

I know a some people has issues running the game at launch, I never had any issues, the game ran fine for me even on my mid-teir GPU, and 8 year old i7. But this new 2020 patch is FANTASTIC! The game runs better than ever! Includes new crazy features like CO-OP, and it looks to fix a lot of the issues that other had. So if you've been eyeing this title for a while, NOWS THE TIME! Special Thanks "Durante" for all his hard work, making this game fully shine on PC.
