A Word From The Dev

OUTBUDDIES' development started as a spare time passion-project in early 2013, influenced by timeless classics of my childhood starring Super Metroid, Castlevania, Super Mario Bros., and Mega Man. The quality, depth, and acceptance of indie metroidvanias like Axiom Verge & Hollow Knight proved what can be achieved by small teams or even single persons. Those developers inspired me to allocate even more personal resources and dedication to the project so it could eventually evolve into something really special.

As a father, daytime employee, and gamer myself I loved how progression and iteration were tackled in outstanding indie platformer Celeste, so OUTBUDDIES was designed to provide challenging and encouraging gameplay while skipping punishing throwbacks and grinding mechanics in total. I listen to feedback and I'm dedicated to support and improve the game further after release, so shoot me your feedback anytime!

Julian Laufer, Game Designer & Developer

Enter Bahlam, a sunken city of the Old Gods, located deep in the South Atlantic Ocean. Following a shipwreck, adventurer and maritime archaeologist Nikolay Bernstein regains consciousness 36.000 feet under the sea. He's severely wounded and unwillingly connected to a supernatural Buddy-unit. Searching for answers about his displacement our main protagonist digs deep into the lost undercity, gradually realizing an ominous presence hollowing in its shadowed caverns.

On your journey home you will share your fate with a friendly tribe of mining creatures, the Wozan, who fear the Old Gods and strive to get back to the surface since their ancestors had been enslaved 5000 years ago. Some of them were able to flee and founded secret colonies deep inside the sunken ruins, others are still exploited by the hostile creatures that have overtaken the city since the Old Gods suddenly disappeared.

Experience real non-linear Metroidvania gameplay and uncover five distinct areas, all with remarkable puzzles, environmental hazards, epic boss encounters and captured Wozan to uncage. Your Buddy unit will procedurally map the area and function as a handy quality of life tool that can be controlled at will to manipulate your surroundings using various abilities like hacking, scanning, and telekinesis.

Explore Bahlam with high freedom of movement like climbing, crawling and diving right from the start. As you progress your set of options will expand by discovering ancient weapon systems, suit upgrades and hacking protocols for your droid. All gear will be carefully balanced in terms of combat abilities and has to be used selectively to overcome specific hazards and puzzles.

The local Co-Op option invites a second player to explore and experience this adventure together by taking control over the invincible Buddy unit. Support each other on your journey home, solve puzzles and overcome Bahlam's hostile maze. This will also provide an opportunity for team-speedrunning as a very unique take on the scene.

Outbuddies is a humble budget project but that does not mean it will run poorly or lack the quality of life features. All pixel art will scale crisp and free of distortion artifacts to your native screen resolution. The game runs at 60 FPS. A hybrid physics engine ensures realistic accelerations and object movements while maintaining the pixel perfect control of the old classics. Enemy and boss AIs are carefully crafted and will kick your ass in a Souls-like manner! Outbuddies also supports various mappable devices like keyboard, mouse and multiple gamepads to ensure you´re able to play with your preferred setup. We listen to feedback, so shoot us a mail anytime!

A Solid Old School MetroidVania

Forewarning, there are some gameplay hurdles you have to get over when starting out, but once you get past them it gets pretty darn enjoyable. I'd place this as a hybrid Metroid\Super Metoid overall. It has features of both with the visuals and sprite animation leaning toward the former and gameplay to the latter. The music is great, with some on the spot kick in the score when the action gets hot, similar to Elder Scrolls games. The gameplay might put off some since it definitely caters to an old school style, in a way it's clunky but definitely serviceable for the overall aesthetics. The addition of the Bot-Buddy is where it breaks the mold. There is a "A Boy And His Blob" feel to the experience that I am enjoying. A sense of loneliness and survival comes through in the end. The initial interface is also clunky and be aware that the input settings have both XInput and DirectInput for varing controllers. I'd recommend this to those who can appreciate the retro style and feel, as well as anyone who enjoys a good Metroid clone. This would be a solid 3 if it were not for the fact that it's a “One Man Show”, bumping it up to 4 just for that reason. Similar to Axiom Verge, although not as tight or fulfilling as Axiom was, which is up there with being one of my favorite Indie Games. Give this one a shot, you might find something that is simple but enjoyable.

Version 1.55 review

Outbuddies is a true Metroid game. Not a -vania, there are no rpg elements like equipment, loot and exp like in Iga-style castlevania games. It's all pure Metroid gameplay, complete with alien world and not knowing what the hell to do. Some nice additions to the formula, like pressured steam based dash and jumps and your companion robot Buddy, who can scan walls for secrets and "hack" enemies. Overall I enjoyed it, but it was a very uneven, frustrating ride with clunky controls. Easily the worst part of the game for me. And being able to glitch jump somewhere only to find some instant death trap instead of a power-up. Wasted a lot of time on that. Specific GOG cons, classic ones: no achievements in galaxy (but in game) and late updates (like a week after steam).

A game for future gamers!

This game is a masterpiece, it literally brought my childhood back... It is not your common "metroidvania" game, it is a METROID game without Samus, you are lost somewhere, you don't know what to do, were to go, you need to survive, but you are not alone this time. Nice mechanics, the controls are a bit clunky, that's not a con, it actually feels like the suit you are using is a bit complicated to control, so why not? The jumping mechanic is pretty hard, sometimes you get a good momentum, and not always seem to work properly, you need to master it. I mean, games these days all plays the same, this one not, you need to learn, you need to adapt, to grow and get used to it, like real life different experiences adds. No Linux support? not natively... not to worry about too, the game is working perfectly in wine out of the box, thanks developer for not making things difficult for us! 8/5 stars: +1 for lone developer, +1 Multiplayer, +1 Labor of love.

Is a decent clone of Metroid 3

Interesting game only if you don't know Super Metroid from Snes. Definitely not a bad videogame. On the contrary, it's a great Metroidvania. The problem I see is that OUTBUDDIES DX looks too much like Snes Super Metroid. However, resembling Nintendo's misunderstood 1994 masterpiece doesn't guarantee that this 2019 video game will be as much fun as its big brother was back in the day. For starters, OUTBUDDIES DX leaves out everything remarkable about Super Metroid. It's important that the player feels that collecting power ups, searching for lost items and exploring actually serves a purpose with the bosses in each stage. It seems to me that the latest update partly solves this problem. Another problem is the health limit. And both the stamina limit and the life limit affect the game experience. The save points are of an eventual nature during the game. Also, the difficulty and learning curve are not well implemented. And this might frustrate some players. Which is very good news for those who like a good challenge. Fans of Super Metroid will surely like this game. It should be noted that at first the controls are not as intuitive as one would like, but little by little with the acquisition of new skills the situation improves a bit. The level design is good and reminds a lot of Super Metroid as already mentioned. The difficulty and challenge curve is moderately high. Exploration is entertaining, but feels a bit limited compared to other titles in the same genre. There are some repetitive bosses and enemies, but that's to be expected. All in all, despite all the negative points of this title I have to say that OUTBUDDIES DX is a solid video game. If you like Super Metroid, give OUTBUDDIES DX a chance.

Great and original Metroid-like game

So, first things first. This is simply a great game in the spirit of Metroid, and it has been quite some time that I played a game that could hold up so great in this genre. But Outbuddies defiantly does. The game is expansive and has a nice weapon power-up system. The vastness of the map can feel a bit daunting at some times, but in reality it works out fine. The progression trough weapons and enemies has a beautiful pace, and offers great variety. I feel it has great enemy and weapon design. As at many times it is more important to select the correct weapons and dodge ablities instead of relying on the player skills (though you defiantly need to be agile). I always applaud new game mechanics and Outbuddies throws enough at you. Really, some other developers can take note of all the extra mechanics next to the normal platforming and shooting. But as a caveat the controls can be confusing with some buttons doing multiple things depending on the movement. The basic movement is as you expect, but some special abilities take some time to get used to. In the end it is not as bad as I left the game for over 2 months but was able to pick it up in no time again. The graphics, music, sound effects are awesome. Though there is not that much variarty in the music, it does not get repetitive and is enjoyable till the end. You can also play split screen co-op, and from what I understand is that each player has his/her own role. But I did not have the chance to play it. And the developer has been pushing out updates with improvements to the game over the last couple of months, which is awesome!
