Description

OTXO (pronounced oh-cho) is a violent top-down shooter with roguelite elements. Play as the protagonist entering an inexplicable mansion in search of his lost love. As you venture deeper into the Mansion, more of its secrets will be unveiled to you.

Featureless, unnamed, and without memories of how you came here… but you remember why. She’s waiting for you somewhere in this Mansion and you cannot leave until you find her. Cut your way through various unique areas and meet new allies as you delve deeper into the mystery, face your inner demons, and annihilate them.

With a massive variety of guns, over 100 abilities, and Focus to dodge bullets at your disposal, kick down doors and eviscerate the variety of enemies standing in between you and your mission.

Tons of replayability: OTXO will take the player through 8 areas with a randomly laid out selection of rooms out of the over 150 hand-crafted rooms built in the game. No two runs of the game will be the same.
Customization: Find the setup that’ll help you break the cycle from a whole selection of unlockable weapons and over 100 acquirable abilities from the game’s enigmatic bartender.
Playstyle: With the slow-mo mechanic, Focus, at your disposal OTXO will make the player feel powerful and in control. However, be careful because the variety of enemy types thrown in your way can quickly turn the tides of the combat if you don’t adapt accordingly.
Soundtrack: Fully immerse yourself into the brutal noir-esque murder ballet through the gritty pulse pumping soundtrack composed by the developer himself.

Almost outstanding

Pros : -Hotline Miami-like gameplay, focusing mostly on gun use. Almost on par with the first game in moment-to-moment play. -An 'unlock for later' vs 'benefit this run' currency system. You're constantly choosing between long term and short term gains. Engaging! -Choices for the special traits are variable, forcing the player to find emergent synergizing opportunities and switch up their play style to take advantage of the options on offer. -Upgrade currency is accelerated if you play aggressively, but it's easy to push into 'reckless' territory and overplay your hand. There's a 'just stealthy enough' sweet spot, and it feels good to ride that once you find it. Solid push-your-luck mechanics, where player skill is a major factor in how fast/far you can go. -You get to choose which weapons show up in any given run of the game, which adds great variability. All shotgun run? All silenced weapons? Just pistols? Legit options, but you're deciding on both your and your enemy's armaments. Unexpected, but wonderful! Cons: Just the one really: Every seven(ish?) levels there's a boss. This ruins the game, IMO. - Boss fights are open arenas. Tactical gameplay disappears - it's all DPS and timed dodge rolling. It's less 'HLM's final fight', more 'playing through Dragon's Lair with one quarter.' - Bosses are REALLY spongy. You generally hold down the fire key and maneuver for ages before taking one down. - Consecutive bosses get even spongier, with faster attack cycling, in smaller arenas, dealing more damage. - When you die because you mistimed two rolls three minutes into a fight an hour into the game, you go back to square one. On most levels, dying is because you had a failure cascade. During boss fights, it's cause you screwed up increasingly-nitpicky timing 3, 4 times. All your weapon choices and upgrade choices end up subsumed to raw DPS. Many interesting upgrades are worthless in boss fights, so they get ignored. It shoots the whole game in the foot.

So cool and so much fun

The game is a blast to play. The music is great, the slow motion is great, the push to keep combos up and the need to constantly switch guns makes the game keep moving quickly. The game also runs flawlessly on Linux with Proton.

Fantastic

One of my all time favorite indies, didn't expect it to come out on gog so soon. More than worth the asking price if you're into games like Hotline Miami. Keep it up Lateralis Heavy Industries!

Oh Man, This Game.

This game is FANTASTIC. I loved every minute of it and still go back and play here and there because you can drop in and out however you like and it's got a low footprint. Story is whatever. It's like a surrealist action movie. A lot of people relate it to Hotline Miami but you play it different: in HM the enemies are braindead and walk straight into bullets while having 0.0sec reaction time and almost perfect accuracy. In HM:2 it's the same thing except most enemies are off-screen so you crab-walk the entire time and trial/error your way into getting them to line up for a supersonic haircut. In Otxo (pronounced oh-cho, means wolf), enemies are varied, have AI, some small tactics, and you also don't die in one hit so battles get protracted. Enemy variation means suiciders, RPG dudes, guys that fire acid bombs, guys at HMG emplacements and shotguns, pistols, etc. There's even cloaking dudes. Add in focus dodge and it's awesome. You can play slow, and creep, but it kills your progress, which is all about momentum and kill streaks. Get comfy with the gameplay loop and eventually the soundtrack catches up with you, and you WANT to just blast into room after room, coldly sidestep hot lead death, dispense metabolic concision, and never ever touch your focus button. The environments get wrecked as you go through: lights, books, vases, explode in sprays of paper and glass. Occasionally, since it's all b/w and isometric, you'll get caught on something. Eh. Bosses are bizarre. Top review here takes the piss out of them, which is a fair take, but I actually found them interesting and the trick is NOT to hold down on the trigger but to learn their patterns and max your damage output while being able to fight back. For instance, reloading while the gardener is tossing autoturrets is a painful mistake. Boss patterns vary enough you have to be quick on your feet and accurate. Some are harder than others. Overall, has that John Woo feel and if you're even decent, it's a thrill.
