Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds

Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds (1998)

by Rage Games Ltd., GT Interactive Software
Story:The game based on Jeff Wayne's musical play and the classic science fiction novel by H.G. Wells. it is the year 1898 and the Martian have escaped from their dying homeworld to conquer the Earth and take its resources - and the blood of its inhabitants. Take either side in this epic real-time strategy game. You can play as the Martians with their superior technology and powerful but expensive war machines in their campaign to take over Great Britain and the rest of the world. Or play as the weaker but more numerous Humans to turn back the alien onslaught before their fiendish plans can be made reality. Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds is a real-time strategy game. There aren't any set missions or a linear story-line, it's all up to you. You must use your time wisely to build up your forces and production facilities within your sectors before the enemy can launch their attack. Research new technologies, construct new buildings, and build new military units to win the game and save your race. The fate of your species, whether Human or Martian, is on the line.Show more

Now this is a nostalgia trip! Play as the Martians and heat ray Victorian-age humanity? What's not to like? 3D rendered RTS based on satellite imagery of the UK with 3D units in 1998, mixed with grand strategy elements - super ahead of it's time! ...and the music, jesus honestly the best remix of the Jeff Wayne themes ever in a game.
Would love this to be made playable again. Used to play this and it's not that easy to do so anymore on modern machines! Iconic score and RTS gameplay was fun.

This is one of the most authentic to source material games I have ever played. I distinctly remember being around 15 years old when I used to wake up at 5am so I could play this (and Police Quest SWAT 2) for a couple of hours before everyone else got up and I had to get ready for school. I can get my original CD copy running in a Virtual Machine but I cannot seem to get the music to play off the CD unfortunately - which just strips the atmosphere away. I know this is a cult favourite not a mainstream money spinner but I'm still sad to see such a small number of votes for such a great game. I would love to experience this in its full glory once again and hopefully get some belated, but thoroughly deserved, affection.
I love this game and finished it a lot ! This game needs support for modern machines and needs to be known more.if this game gets support for modern machines it world be great!
Everyone who loves science fiction should play this. A great interpretation of the book, Jeff Wayne's music, cannons against war machines just a great under appreciated game with graphics ahead of it's time as already said. You also get to hear Nigel Hawthorne (Yes Prime Minister) with regular progress updates. A pity when you search for 'war of the worlds' this only comes up as an option after you complete the whole name.
Great sci-fi rendition. When i finally won it the first thing I did was start all over and try to do an even better job beating the martians. Would definately recommend this game to retro strategy gamers.
Such a excellent game, you can stick it on a virtual machine, and if you are persistent you can get the Cd music playing, but The 2 Cd system of a Martian CD, and a Human CD make it 2 separate games, Slip a new launcher on it, copy the cd tracks to ogg/mp3 files, make some people really happy.
Absolutely love this RTS game, I'm a massive fan of the H G wells Novel and the Jeff Wayne's musical and I love the game, the only problem is whenever I now try to get this game and play it for my windows 10 I can never get it to work, it would be great if GOG would bring this game on here to buy and download but also make it so it would work on windows 10 and higher as well as older versions of windows.
