I first rented this game in my pre-teens or so, it was said it was a hard game (meh, well it's maybe the third hardest RPG on the SNES). Got stuck in a dungeon (you have to fall into a pit to proceed). Game back years later and mostly demolished it. Came back to it in college to write and refine a major FAQ for the game, learned the ins and outs and that's how I learned it has two different endgames. I love the aspect of meeting and interacting with people who become casual acquaintances, tense rivals, or long-term companions, while also fighting memorable enemies like fat fire breathing rats and fairies that use breath attacks by playing their flutes. Oh, and the historical fiction aspect where stick yourself in the thick of the plotting between rival daimyos is cool, too.

Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Mystical Ninja Starring GoemonThe story follows Goemon's struggles to prevent the Peach Mountain Shoguns gang from turning Japan into a Westernized fine arts theater. The plot calls for three cinematic musical features and battles between giant robots; like other Ganbare Goemon games, it is peppered with surrealist humor and anachronisms. The protagonist of Mystical Ninja is Goemon, a hot-blooded, kiseru-wielding ninja with blue, bushy hair based loosely on the legendary thief Ishikawa Goemon. The lord of Oedo asks him to find those who maimed Oedo Castle. Goemon lives in Oedo Town and is friends with Ebisumaru, a strange, gluttonous fat man who wears a blue bandana. Ebisumaru is defined as lazy and perverted. Their kunai-throwing friend Sasuke is a mechanical ninja (made by the Wise Man of Iga) who enjoys hot baths and Japanese tea. Rounding out the heroes is Yae, a fierce sword-wielding kunoichi, who happens upon Goemon's band in Zazen Town. The villains of the game hail from the organization Peach Mountain Shoguns and include a gang of four "weirdos" led by Spring Breeze Dancin' (Danshin Harukaze) and Kitty Lily (Margaret Ranko). They intend to transform Japan into a stage for their talents.

Ganbare Goemon: Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu
Ganbare Goemon: Uchuu Kaizoku AkoginguGanbare Goemon: Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu is a Ganbare Goemon game released for the PlayStation on March 22, 1996. One night, Goemon awakens from his sleep to some huge noise, so he and Ebisumaru decide to go and investigate. The pair find out that it's an alien, and that Edo's being invaded! This is the first Goemon game since Sasuke and Yae's appearance as playable characters that doesn't include either on the playable roster. Instead, they are replaced by the new characters Goroku and Baban. Although Sasuke and Yae are playable characters again in most future games and Goroku and Baban are never seen, mentioned or heard from again after this game. Its unknown why they never appear again, but it is assumed that many fans were upset over Sasuke and Yae being replaced. Gameplay is rather similar to Ganbare Goemon 3, as there's a main map in top-down perspective, which leads to various 2-D sidescrolling levels.
