Amongst the various strategy games that released in 1989, somehow this one found its way to me. I had played SimCity and given Populous a shot, but somehow a disk got passed to me with Gold of the Americas. I played this one for years over and over, and I never really explored more in the genre until many years later. This particular game has good balance, and it doesn't go on forever. It manages to teach the player something about the colonial era even if that something is from a very specific perspective. It's a good game and definitely worth playing again.
