Discworld (1995)

by Perfect Entertainment, Psygnosis
Genres:Adventure, Puzzle, Point-and-click
Themes:Fantasy, Historical, Comedy
Game modes:Single player
Story:Discworld is a game released for PC (subsequently Mac, and Playstation) by Teeny Weeny / Perfect 10 studios in 1995. The game was released both on floppy disk and CD-Rom. The latter featured a commentary team created of many veterans of famous Brit-Coms. This included Monty Python's Eric Idle, Radio 4's (later to be more famous) Rob Brydon, ex- Doctor Who John Pertwee, 70s pop singer Kate Robbins, and Blackadder star Tony Robinson. The game is a riff on the Discworld title 'Guards, Guards', however many elements of the text have been shifted, not least the inclusion of Rincewind as protagonist. The game featured puzzles which were considered far too difficult and obtuse for gamers of the time, but the game itself has had a lasting legacy, now being accepted into such emulators as SCUMMVM.Show more

This game was nothing less but crazy :) Crazy riddles, crazy humour and crazy difficulty. It had cool dialogues and really felt like Diskworld books by TP. It would be far too difficult in terms riddles today. I remember it being almost impossible to beat withiout walkthrough.

Actually I played the PS1 version last year. As stated by loganoid, puzzles tend to be difficult. Also there is pixel hunting. It took me over 30 hours to go through it. As a last resort I more than once had to simply mix and match every item with every hotspot, and all the items with each other. But the humor makes it all for the better. Great game. 32bit console load times where bad, though. So the PC version surely must be superior.

One of my Favorite PS1 Game. I Bought it at Funcoland not knowing what type of Game it was and was just Intrigued by the Longbox Art and the Back. I Still have this Game and I would Definitely get this for PC. Gameplay would make more sense using a Mouse.

Folk who were fans of the discword novels had it good back then. Especially with this and the 2nd game, I was heavily into click and point adventure games back then and if this ever gets onto GOG i'd be grateful.

Discworld is one of the greatest fantasy series of all time, and this adventure captured the humor so perfectly, fusing "Guards! Guards!" with a Rincewind story. While the puzzles are occasionally very obscure, the general vibe of the game and especially Eric Idle's performance as Rincewind made it so that it was never really frustrating but instead gave you an itch to keep trying.

This game and it's successor is what got me started reading the Discworld books and discovering the genre of fantasy for real. The story was funny and some of the tasks were frustratingly hard to figure out. But me and my best friend had so much fun playing this one, both together and alone, and then discussing it and sharing what worked in school the day after. The game is a classic, by one of the best writers in history, with some really great talent sharing their voices and work in it.

Nice graphics even for today standards. Plus, the humor it's really fun. This game introduced me to Discworld and made me read the books, discovering an original take about fantasy stories that I've enjoyed so much. I agree about puzzles being really challenging, but nothing that a simple walkthrough cannot solve.

my first playstation game and even though its frustrating its an amazing homage to terry pratchetts work, voice casting is perfect and the humour is completely on point

I played this even before I read anything of Pratchett, and it was good indeed. Later when I read "Guards! Guards?", I was surprised to see I already sorta knew the story. But nonetheless, the graphics and the humour is all there, and it's a game that should be available for everyone who enjoys the books, and so for those willing to get into the Discworld.

If you don’t want this game in your library then you must be mad… and “If you're mad you don't want to run around infecting everybody else”. I don’t like having to emulate to play my favourite games. Vote for discworld on gog!

Black & White 2
Black & White 2In the game, the player takes the role of a god called from the void (nothingness) to help those who invoked them. However, the player is not an omnipotent style god, but rather a god who rises and falls with his believers and the player must help develop their nature according to their good or evil desires. The player also has a creature, their physical representation in the world, which takes the form of an anthropomorphic ape, lion, wolf, turtle, cow, or tiger. Its physical manifestation can grow to an immense size, and adopt a good or evil persona separate of the player's. They develop their character as the player rewards or punishes their actions. In addition to the god simulation and city-building elements introduced in the original Black & White, Black & White 2 also features elements of real-time strategy gameplay, with the addition of controllable warfare and fighting units.

Freelancer
FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival. Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed. The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo. As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity. Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control. There can be tenuous peace between colonies' political agendas, but the grabs for holdings constantly unsettle the volatile frontier.
