Aside from being really fun, this vehicular combat racer had a lot of character. Upon starting a new game, you were faced with three difficulty choices. The ones I remember were "I live to ride" and "petrol in my veins." You could then choose your character portrait from the game's roster and make your name. The roster had memorable characters like Sam Speed, Duke Nukem, Jane Honda, Bogus Bill, and Farmer Ted. I used to pick Sam Speed because he was supposed to be the best, but later I chose Bogus Bill or Farmer Ted to roleplay rags-to-riches. Regardless of character creation, you always started with the worst car. The cars had memorable names like Vagabond (VW Beetle), Dervish (pickup truck), Sentinel (coupe), Shrieker (sedan), Wraith (looked like a classic sports car to me), and Deliverator (looked like a wide-bodied concept version of a Formula One car). The game tallied league points for the whole roster as you played, and Sam Speed always seemed to fall off probably because he had the fastest car so he was always being shot from behind. The league was divided into three difficulty classes with the race rewards being proportional to the difficulty, and the highest difficulty was filled with wraiths and deliverators, while the lower difficulties had worse cars. The game was fun both on and off the track with you being able to purchase vehicle upgrades (engine, tires, etc.) and weapon upgrades as well as per race weapons (spiked bumper and mines) and sabotage against a random opponent's car for your next race when you were off the track. Also, you could visit the menacing loan shark to jumpstart your vehicle upgrades and you could accept missions like taking minimal damage. On the track, aside from racing and destroying your opponents, you could pick up cash, repair buffs, and drug(?) debuffs. Pushing a destroyed car onto a repair buff made them race again. In the shareware version, you were limited to up to the worst 3 cars and you won by topping the league.
