Dawn of Magic

Dawn of Magic (2007)

by SkyFallen Entertainment, Atari, Inc., Deep Silver
Genres:Role-playing (RPG), Adventure
Themes:Action, Fantasy, Horror
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer
Story:Dawn of Magic is a third-person RPG where the weapon of choice is magic. Unlike any other Action RPG, player characters in Dawn of Magic are all of one type: Mage. However, with dozens of different fields of magic available, players will have plenty of opportunities to customize their characters and specialize in the magic of their choice. The game is set in a richly detailed, medieval fantasy world, allowing the player a wide variety of choices both in individual quests and character development.Show more

Dawn of Magic is the base game, whereas the so-called Dawn of Magic 2 is merely a smaller stand-alone expansion. They share many of the basic systems, but a lot of the varied environments, music, characters and story beats are missing in DoM2. Its core feature is a spell system that allows for a variety of combinations and which stands in for the usual skill systems. Further there is also crafting and a good variety of loot to find. The individual acts are fairly varied in terms of natural environments and in terms of city architecture. They are also much larger than they need to be. However, the game also hands the player a handy teleport that starts out with fairly good range. Much of the story content is more on the humorous side and I would not recommend it on that basis alone. But the game also differs somewhat based on the choice of good/neutral/evil character, which mostly influences the boss selection and some of the dialogue.

What make me search to vote for this game is that when I play for the first time, I like it was a Diablo style of game, and it has a unique dynamic in which every choice of equipment (and something else, don't remember) could change drastically the appearance of the personage. From Wikipedia: "Each school of magic consists of eight spells; as the player gains prowess in a school of magic, his or her body morphs to take on characteristics reminiscent of the school. " This, for me, is a feature never seemed in any other game so far (in the way those changes drastically transform the whole body). Look at the sixth screenshot to observe this feature! Beyond that, the game was what you expect from a Diablo style, lots of open maps and a lot of monsters to kill.

Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon
Zelda: The Wand of GamelonZelda: The Wand of Gamelon was the product of a compromise between Nintendo and Philips following their failure to release a CD-ROM based add-on to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was developed in tandem with Link: The Faces of Evil and marks the first game where the eponymous princess Zelda is playable. The Wand of Gamelon differ from most conventional Zelda games as it is a platformer with a side-scrolling view, similar to The Adventure of Link. Stages are accessed from a world map, with more becoming available as Zelda clears an area or defeats a boss. The game have been subject to much criticism and Nintendo does not recognize it as part of the series.
