Hawaii: an idyllic island paradise. It's the spot Brian Basco and Gina Timmins have chosen to take a well-earned vacation. An impromptu day trip to a remote and relatively uninhabited island goes awry, however; the plane stops working, and fast action is required if anyone is going to get out of the “idyllic trip” alive. Brian forces Gina from the plane, giving her the only working parachute. Brian luckily survives the plane's crash landing, but Gina has disappeared, setting the stage for a highly entertaining story.

In Runaway: The Dream of the Turtle, you will travel the world, from Alaska to Hawaii, from the highest reaches of the sky above to the harrowing deeps of the sea below, spooling out the thread of a gripping story. Immerse yourself in this tongue-in-cheek story where you'll meet a crazy cast of miscreants in order to solve a mystery too weirdly entertaining for words.

  • Up to 100 locations from all four corners of the world rendered in lush detail.
  • Excellent production, marvelous scenarios, ever-present humor, and amazing puzzles.
  • More than 30 fully-realized characters, all with distinct (and occasionally oddball) personalities.
  • Over an hour of amazing animated sequences!

A very pretty and very flawed game

So being a fan of the adventure genre, I figured I had to play Pendulo's "Runaway" series. I played them all in order, and I'd have to say that unfortunately "Dream of the Turtle" is by the weakest installment. That's not to say the game is all bad - the visuals are gorgeous and Brian Basco remains as charming as ever. The settings are mostly quite varied. However, the real trouble comes in with the gameplay and design. To begin, some of the puzzles are pretty arbitrary, but then again every adventure game has this problem. However, "Dream of the Turtle" takes this to another level... I won't spoil any details but you'll have to repeat things a lot to figure out the right solution. And here comes my biggest gripe: the animations. What i mean by this is that if you want to talk to somebody, you'll see the character do a long animation, then walk over slowly, then start talking. AND THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME. Now there's this one part in the beginning where you might talk to a Colonel. You might do this more than once. This means you'll have to talk to the guard, get led down, sit down, see a bunch of short cutscenes repeating the same thing again, then see another long cutscene of him telling you to get out. AND YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS EVERY TIME YOU NEED TO TALK TO HIM. These kind of repetitive actions/scenes really tempted me to put the game down - you just get sick of hearing the same thing over and over again. Couldn't Pendulo just have made a quick intro once, then get to the conversation, and take out those short cutscenes? They take forever! Speaking of length, some of the cutscenes towards the end are unimaginably long and really drag out this game too long. AND it ends on a cliffhanger. Talk about leaving a bad impression. Fortunately, "A Twist of Fate" is much, much, much better and smoother so it resolves nicely. If you are an adventure fan I'd say pass but if you want to find out what happens between "A Road Adventure" and "A Twist of Fate" I'd say give it a try.

Runaway 3 > Runaway 1 > Runaway 2

Interesting and enjoyable at the beginning, complicated and frustrating in the middle, boring before the ending.. and there is no ending... It ends before you fulfill your main objective. Having played Runaway 1 is not necessary as this story is not connected to the previous. Although some characters from Runaway 1 reappear here. Thankfully Runaway 3 is a lot better !! It continues the story of Runaway 2 but in a totally different way.

Burns away your good will

(GOG keeps saying my review is too long, so...) -Terrible puzzles -No logic -Incredibly slow to carry out any action -Lots of obscure pixel-hunting -Tonnes of backtracking -Lots of crashes -Only pixel-hunting/inventory puzzles In the end, my appreciation of the first game carried me through this game (which just ends, with no conclusion, half way through the adventure) - but it was not fun. If you do buy it, just print out a walkthrough and follow it every step of the way - it'll be a much more pleasurable experience.

Bad user inferface, only half a story

I really liked the first part. I heard bad things about the second, and still I bought and played it. I was not really enthused about the game. The story is lame. You don't get to solve the initial problem, the kicker of the game – that's reserved for a sequel. Makes for a frustrating ending. Also, the game flow is bad. You often have to click on objects again after looking at something else or talking to someone, because Brian can't figure out how the thing might be important in the first place. The inventory feels clunky as does the options menu. There is no separate volume control for voice, sound and music. This means that either you have no music at all (at least that's possible!) or you have a hard time understanding the dialogue if you do not want to read the subtitles (which I resorted to). There is no way to skip animated sequences. This is annoying throughout the game, but especially annoying when you need to watch the loooong door-opening animation every fricking time you want to change from one location to the next. As for almost all adventure games: walking speed is too slow. Clunky UI is used to artifically strech the game. Making it less fun and less worth. The game crashes at the most inconvenient times. This means I had to replay a lot, watching all those animated scenes. I made it through though, to prepare me for Runaway 3 – which is supposed to be better. I would not recommend this one, unless you are an adventure game addict.

Great game but ends on a cliffhanger

A very interesting and fun to play adventure game with satisfactorily difficult inventory puzzles, colorful graphics and a suitably zany plotline. However it ends on an abrupt cliffhanger that is only resolved in the next (and final) game in the series.
