Along with the chance to ponder humanity's fragile relationship with the world it currently inhabits today…
Humanity is unrecognizable in the year 3600 CE. Centuries of war, socio-economic strife, and the impending climate catastrophe, put the apex species on the verge of extinction. Turning back from the brink, humans chose a different path, one of healing, peace, and reverence for the ecosystem they are a part of. As Earth heals, every human who reaches adulthood is now tasked with learning how to become one with Nature. Your tribe has chosen Enen for your adventure.
The graphics are pretty decent, nice relaxing music, the concept of meditation is nice. Finding the treasure chests and other surprises is fun.
The days are too short with night falling before 7 PM (19:00) and it gets really dark. They don't give you anything you can craft at the start to light your way, not even a torch so this can become a problem if you are not near a lit camp fire when it gets dark and then there is still around an hour of game time before you can sleep. Bad planning and pretty unrealistic unless it is winter, which it does not seem to be in the game.
The game mechanics - building , hunting, etc, are pretty awkward. The map is fairly useless, seems to be water painting and quite vague.
I got it 60% off and that's the most I would pay for a game of this quality.
A nice exploration & survival game. You start out on a tropical island where you have to search for food and building materials. In the beginning it may be hard to stay alive and I recommend saving each time before going to sleep, as spiders may poison you during sleep. Drinking water from a pond also has a random chance of poisoning you. Later on you can get around this or create potions that will heal you. But in the very beginning you have to carefully decide what to build next and when. The crafting and building system feels similar to that of Medieval Dynasty and similar games. You can build a wooden hut and later on you get more options for building stone buildings or even more modern ones. It's odd however, that the modern buildings still make use of the same wooden roof as the wooden hut. A modern roof later on might have been a better option.
Compared to many other games, Retreat to Enen is different when it comes to quests. Many games offer you a lot of quests and side-quests. Retreat to Enen takes a much simpler approach, visit 3 islands and on each of them the quest is the same: visit 3 ruins and a cave to get access to the next island. I liked this simple approach as it gives you much freedom.
The interface looks nice but controls could have been better. For movement the wasd keys are used and a few others like q, e and x for interaction. Many times I had the feeling: why not use the left mouse button for the e-key instead? And the right mouse button for the x-key for example.
The game has many beautiful places that you might want to take a picture of. But unfortunately, no screenshot feature is included. Also, there's no way to hide the interface completely, as that would have worked too.
On some of the GOG screenshots I could see a compass. However, it seems to have been removed as it was not present in the latest version. A pity, as the map is a very rough sketch of the island with very few details. The player position and the marker-flags are not indicated on this map for example. The map only gives you a rough idea where the ruins are.
The landscape looks realistic but you can easily get lost. Even though you're the only person on the islands, the islands feel very lively with birds in the air and animals walking about. The ambient sound only reinforces that.
After you have visited all 3 islands, you can go your own way and build a larger house anywhere on the 3 islands. The game felt a little bit short on one hand, but gives you a lot of freedom on the other hand. I would love to see more from this developer, as suggested by the ending scene.
.
The concept is nice, the game would be nicer if there were more mechanics and better gameplay. There's a lot to explore that could be used to provide a richer experience.
This game seems to be a mishmash of wildly different and incompatble ideas forcefully mashed together by some rushed, overworked and not very experienced developers.
Ok, the basic idea of you getting "stranded" on an island is nothing to write home about. But it can be done. CAN. This game doesn't.
Instead of focussing their efforts on the actual environment, even though that's supposed to be the main selling point, the developers seemingly spent a lot of time inventing some meditation functionality. Wow! Seriously? Yikes.
As others mentioned before, the day-night cycle is messed up, it's far too short and annoying. A good sign of the developers running out of ideas (or time, or both) and therefore cheaply creating needless artificial pressure on the player. Always a bad sign.
Topology of the island(s) is quite inconsistent and more bent on getting you lost than anything else. Map is not helping, it's basically useless. It exists, but it might as well not.
While I haven't encountered any major bugs, other have. It seem to run much better with wine than on actual windows, which quickly seem to become normal nowadays.
Still, I suppose this game wasn't playtested much outside the group of developers, otherwise it wouldn't have been released like this.
It was long time since i found a real survival game challenge to win, but this game really makes me struggle for my right to survive at every turn, and it is so fun to play, that it is frustrating how fast this game becomes highly addictive, and you keep on reloading the game again for another round against the elements and everything that tries to make sure you will lose, just for satisfation to feel you have survived another day again.
