Hello there,

I am waiting for the June sales to get Zork. In the meantime, I am wondering how to play the game.

Since it is a text-based game, you have to make extra efforts to immerse into the story. What do you do? You just play the game? You listen to a particular music? You get naked in your room and switch off the lights?
Wow, that's a good question. I haven't even tried playing Zork while listening to music. But if I did, I'd definitely put something really creepy playing in the background with random noises such as doors opening, rats squeaking and maniacal laughs. (I wonder if anything like that even exists...)

To immerse in to the story, I think it's quite recommended to turn off all the lights. But getting naked probably isn't necessary unless it's really hot inside. :p

And drink something to keep you awake, reading white text on a black background for several hours can make you really tired. And then perhaps bring a bag of nuts if you're not allergic and munch on them. Playing Zork hungry is torture and you will easily start to forget things. xD

Are you insane?

Don't you know what lurks in the dark?

You get naked in your room ..?
Yes, but then that's how i play every game. :)

I don't really have to make that much of an extra effort to immerse myself. Much like when i'm reading a book i just let my imagination do its thing, so yeah, i guess i just play the game.

N-not turning off the lights in the game, that'd surely be insane! -shiver-

Also, it's more exciting when you don't know if the real thing will come and get you while you play in the dark. So, OP, if you don't want to risk your life, play with lights on. You might otherwise get eaten by a gr- I mean trip over a wire or something.

Nudity only entices the Grue, fool!
I don't care if the food is naked or not.

I would say you can play I and II any way you like, but I would suggest playing III in the dark since the atmosphere is creepy and eerie. I and II have a tendency to get silly at times, but III seems the most grim out of the original all-text series.
I'm reviving the dead thread, but to ad my $0.2:

Alex Crispin - Escape the Dark Castle - soundtrack for the board game of the same name.

Google it. Then buy it (cheapooo!) or just listen over the YouTube.
