chricton: As there is no changelog for Ys Origin, does anyone know what this update (2023-12-08_(69564)) is for? There is a significant file size change from the original installation executable.
I only know they added languages maybe ingame?
According to steam Ys Origin can now be played with French, German, Italian, and Spanish text!
Also Sara replied on steam to a user:
I'm sorry about that, it really is a pain. Having said that, I think about these things too: the language data is only downloaded if you select that language. If you look in your files, you'll see no signs of the languages you aren't using, and each language's data files only include the specific files for that language, which are layered on top of the base data.
Most of the filesize in the update was adjustments to the game's overall data structure, and implementing much higher-resolution video files; the game's video files at launch were less than 480p, and encoded in MPEG, whereas now they are 1080p and use a much more modern encoder to save on space while maintaining quality. (Funny enough, this results in similar filesizes for the videos, but obviously they still had to be completely redownloaded.)
One way or another, though, I'm really sorry for inconveniencing you. I really wish we lived in a world with no data limits, especially in this era of constant connectivity.
Ys Origin was only my second project with XSEED and our second overall Steam release. I really wasn't thinking about the structure for situations like this yet and was only concerned with the single English language release and nothing else. Nowadays I take more care in my projects and look ahead toward future possibilities in advance to save myself some grief, but basically the age of the original English localization project caused a lot of these growing pains when implementing new languages. I really am sorry for the trouble.
Edit:
Now i wonder are videos only in 1080p why not more video formats in case somebody could not run it clean enough.
