As there is no changelog for Ys Origin, does anyone know what this update (2023-12-08_(69564)) is for? There is a significant file size change from the original installation executable.

I only know they added languages maybe ingame?
According to steam Ys Origin can now be played with French, German, Italian, and Spanish text!

Also Sara replied on steam to a user:
I'm sorry about that, it really is a pain. Having said that, I think about these things too: the language data is only downloaded if you select that language. If you look in your files, you'll see no signs of the languages you aren't using, and each language's data files only include the specific files for that language, which are layered on top of the base data.

Most of the filesize in the update was adjustments to the game's overall data structure, and implementing much higher-resolution video files; the game's video files at launch were less than 480p, and encoded in MPEG, whereas now they are 1080p and use a much more modern encoder to save on space while maintaining quality. (Funny enough, this results in similar filesizes for the videos, but obviously they still had to be completely redownloaded.)

One way or another, though, I'm really sorry for inconveniencing you. I really wish we lived in a world with no data limits, especially in this era of constant connectivity.

Ys Origin was only my second project with XSEED and our second overall Steam release. I really wasn't thinking about the structure for situations like this yet and was only concerned with the single English language release and nothing else. Nowadays I take more care in my projects and look ahead toward future possibilities in advance to save myself some grief, but basically the age of the original English localization project caused a lot of these growing pains when implementing new languages. I really am sorry for the trouble.
Edit:
Now i wonder are videos only in 1080p why not more video formats in case somebody could not run it clean enough.

Thanks for posting that, Fonzer. Is anyone actually able to download the new languages, though? GOG only seems to have the English version at the moment.

According to the files listed on gogdb

https://www.gogdb.org/product/1422357892/build/57110891119171182

the new files are in fact included (you can see "data_it.*", "data_de.*" and "data_fr.*" (Italian/German/French) so my guess would be that they are selectable via the config.exe file. I don't own the game myself so I can't test it.

Hm, yeah, I definitely have those files, too. I wonder if I've done something wrong? I'll submit a support ticket, fwiw.

Did you try starting the config.exe?

Yes, from the beginning, sorry I thought I had mentioned it. The language menu is greyed out and inaccessible, even though the files are present and the button confirms there are European localizatoin credits.

Okay. Without having the files to test I can't help you here regarding the normal way. But is seems as if it might be enough to simply rename the language files:

If you don't want to follow to the steam forums:

"change data_us.* to data.*
change data.* to data_us.*"

Of course you would have to rename the language file you need.

Heh, that's clever, thank you!

You're welcome. Support ticket still might help because normally you should not be expected to rename your own files.

Even if they can help me, the advice is useful, because judging from the rest of the thread, Japanese isn't supported any official way due to licensing issues. So if anyone wants to play in Japanese, renaming files might be your only option. :/
I'm not sure why, but the language selection box in the Configuration Tool is just... working now. I didn't do anything, there were no apparent updates, and like I already said the tool seemed to be perfectly up-to-date prior to now? That's good news, I just don't know how or why it happened!
This new version works like a charm on Mac CrossOver on Apple Silicon, the previous one didn't work.

- From CrossOver when installing the game use a Windows 10 64-bit config and install the extra packages DirectX 9, DirectX for modern games, and maybe (had installed because other games on the bottle) VC++ runtime 2019 (x64).
- For video playback install, with winetricks, from a command line:
WINEPREFIX=/full/path/to/bottle winetricks amstream quartz lavfilters

Then run config and select language, by default it could run on japanese, the langauge is the box at right bottom, try to select yours and then press the button at down with the (A) text.

This method is valid for most classic Falcom games, like Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky saga too.
