The ingame menu can't be accessed. This means I can't save, which is a game breaker with this game. Is there a hotkey or something? I also can only quite by pressing ctrl-Q. I'm on windows 10.

hold your cursor at the very top edge of your screen for a few seconds and a drop down menu should appear.
