I've spent hours and hours troubleshooting this game without any progress.

Here's what I'm experiencing:

9 times out of 10 the game will crash on the very first mission. After I kill the last alien the game seems unable to bring up the mission debriefing info box that you read and click continue on (who died, how many aliens killed, etc).

So for the 10% of times I make it past that first mission, the game crashes when I try to manufacture 1 Medikit. As soon as I click "build" or whatever it's instant crash.

I'm on windows 10...but I have compatibility mode set to Windows 8. I've deleted and re-downloaded the game once already.

Is there something in common about those two crash circumstances that would help with troubleshooting? Thanks!

Try playing in "borderless window", in options under video. That took away 75% of the crashes for me.
Also try running the game with admin rights. It still crashes, but less than before.
Thanks for the suggestions...still can't make it past the first mission. If I do it just crashes at the end of the second mission.
Check if your video card drivers are up to date. If they are not It might cause some crashes.

Xcom supports PhysX, but for som reason it isn't using it. The Xcomengine.ini file, the one in documents/My Games/XcomGame (not in the game map) is set to disable GPU and only use CPU.

Try change "bDisablePhysXHardwareSupport" from True to False.
Thanks, I tried that just now, but it's not helping. I'm using Radeon graphics, not Nvidia, though.

I'm wodering what it is about the end of a mission that Windows doesn't like...the error is Exception code: 0xc0000005
Ok I figured it out. End of your first mission without losing a solider = an achievement. So is purchasing a medkit for the first time.

My firewall blocked GOG from being able to award me the achievement, so naturally this caused a crash.

So I don't think it's possible to play this game offline.

What if I do not use Galaxy and I do not care about achievements?

I'm running the game on Windows 8.1 Pro, I don't have Galaxy, my firewall(s) blocks everything by default and I've played for several multi-hour stretches without a single game-breaking issue or crash.

I have noticed a small annoyance where the game resets my characters' armour deco type back to 1 every so often, but that's just a minor cosmetic bug in the game.

Update: I have now completed the game without any crashes or problems due to not having Galaxy or allowing the game network access. As a side note, the game was good enough to keep me playing to the end, but it's not without flaws and it's certainly not as good as the original X-COM.

Update 2: I didn't realise that Enemy Within is the same game as Enemy Unknown, just with some tweaks and that it requires you to start over from the beginning of the same campaign. I thought it was an actual expansion of new missions. Had I known, I would have skipped Enemy Unknown entirely instead of wasting my time on it. What a disappointment.

Yeah, the crash related bugs seem very random; most people have none of them, some have a few, and a small number get problems all the time. There are some common culprits (driver issues, for example), but they don't seem to apply to everyone.

(The armor deco thing is apparently just the gig with a small bug that crops up in the game; it seems to happen to almost everyone sometimes, and certainly happened with the old Steam version).
Hi everyone,

I am also having random crashes, most of the time the game runs smoothly but then for no apparent reason it crashes to desktop.

All drivers are up to date, Win 7 fully updates, full admin rights for the game. Don't know what else to do. I don't think it's related to the offline gaming to, on first start the Windows firewall asked if the game may access internet, I refused it and I still get the achievements, naturally because Galaxy still has access to internet....
JUst bought the game, and finding it crashes to desktop repeatedly when I try to upgrade certain soldiers. I'm not quite certain exactly what the circumstances are, possibly it's just the individual soldier. I thought it was because I was attempting to upgrade wounded soldiers, but unwounded ones cause it too. Only certain ones though, and if I leave them with upgrades pending tne game continues fine. I tried dismissing the affected soldiers, but it looks like there will always be one or two affected...

It's not much good like this, even for a fiver...

thats strange....

I have a win10 pro 64 bit system, 32 GB ram, Nvidia 1060 6GB GTX, SSD,
The Game is alway running and i had no crashes....

Wich System you use?
MaybeCheck the Updates for your system and drivers...
Internet access is not required to beat the game. (My gaming laptop is not connected to the interwebz.)

These crashes could be from insufficient privileges, so make sure to grant the executable file administration rank. Apart from graphics and sound drivers, ensure that the game hasn't been installed in the C\Program Files folder, as that will cause all sorts of crazy crashes.
