I'm running Long War of the Chosen which uses a custom version of Community Highlander, if I remember correctly. Works like a charm, but requires some fiddling during Mod installation, See instructions for mod installations here:

https://www.gog.com/game/xcom_2 - check the "review" entitled You can play the GOG version with mods

I'm actually having the same problem; crashing on startup. I've followed all the directions regarding adding things to the DefaultModOptions.ini file. I'm only running the Highlander mod. How did you fix it when it happened to you?

What I did was I opened the x2 community file from the workshop, copy the engine and xcomgames folders and override the files in user/GoG/XCOM2/WaroftheChosen/XcomGame and that's it. it should only override 4 files.

Thanks for the response. Did you copy the directories from the src folder? I don't see the 4 files that you're mentioning. Sorry if I'm being slow. Thanks.

Edited to add:

I think I figured it out. I just copied the .upk files from CookedPCConsole. I wasn't sure about the Config files in the mod, though. Thanks again.

how to instal long war of the chosen on gog version ?
I found no way I could get this to work on my GOG version. Then I tried this from the Highlander wiki trouble shooting, and it worked. I get an error come up now about ambiguous folder , but I exit it off and game starts.

The game failed to load the XComGame replacement. Both Steam Family Sharing and a missing internet connection have been reported to cause this.

The latter problem has been reported to be circumvented by copying all files from

<Steam>\SteamApps\workshop\content\268500\1134256495\CookedPCConsole\

or your respective installation location to

%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\XCOM2 War of the Chosen\XComGame\CookedPCConsole\

Please note that after doing this, removing the X2WOTCCommunityHighlander requires you to remove the files you copied manually.
